Energy, Transportation and Trade Opportunities

Linking Binational Opportunities in the San Diego-Tijuana Region, Thursday, July 29, 1999, 8:15 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at San Diego Association of Governments, (SANDAG), 401 B Street, Suite 800, San Diego, CA 92101.

SANDAG's Committee on Binational Regional Opportunities (COBRO) and the Consul General of Mexico in San Diego are co-sponsoring a summer conference to discuss the opportunities and challenges of linking energy, transportation, and trade in our binational region.

Almost 5 million people live in the San Diego-Baja California region, and projections indicate that within the next 15 years, our binational population could grow by another 2 million people.

The region's ability to harness the economic growth opportunities presented by its expanding population and trade-related industries will depend upon the availability of adequate infrastructure. This conference will focus specifically on two crucial pieces of our region's infrastructure related to trade: energy and transportation.

ENERGY: Both Mexico and the United States are currently considering energy reform proposals at the federal level in an attempt to provide reliable energy supplies at reasonable costs. Additionally, many states in both countries have already begun energy deregulation processes. Speakers from both sides of the border will present local energy issues in the context of the emerging government frameworks, and will discuss current and future binational energy opportunities.

TRANSPORTATION: San Diego and Baja California are undertaking exciting improvements to highways, commercial ports of entry, and seaports. Speakers from both sides of the border will discuss these improvements and highlight additional transportation and trade-related challenges and opportunities.

After the speakers have presented their material, conference participants will be asked to help develop recommendations for actions that can be undertaken in the binational region.
