Editor's Note: In the July 9, 1999 issue of "La Prensa San Diego" we published a story entitled "Deadline Nears for Community College Student to take Advantage of Guaranteed Admission to SDSU." The submitted story only listed three community colleges in the San Diego region giving the impression that the guarantee admission policy was limited to the three JC programs. In fact the guarantee program includes all the community colleges in San Diego and Imperial County. To clarify this point we are reprinting a story from San Diego State University.
In a unified effort among San Diego's leaders in higher education, a first-of-its-kind agreement between San Diego State University and San Diego and Imperial county community colleges was signed today (June 10, 1999).
The "Transfer Admission Guarantee Agreement" (TAG) creates a new opportunity for students who want to attend San Diego State University. TAG would allow community college freshmen students, including students who were unable to gain admission to SDSU for the fall 1999 semester, to count on admission from local community colleges if they satisfy basic requirements.
SDSU President Stephen L. Weber initiated talks that led to the TAG agreement in response to concerns from regional community colleges. The concerns developed after SDSU raised its admissions requirements in order to manage its enrollment.
"We recognize that San Diego State has a commitment to the region, and we want to be certain that qualified students are able to continue their education," said Weber. "We asked the Community Colleges to work with us on this agreement to provide an additional opportunity for San Diego and Imperial County residents to take advantage of SDSU's fine academic environment."
Weber and the President or Chancellor of nine community colleges and three districts in San Diego and Imperial Counties signed the agreement. It goes into effect for students who wish to enroll at SDSU in the fall of 2000.
To take advantage of the TAG agreement, students must have declared a major, be fully CSU eligible and have no need of remediation. The student is required to bring 60 transferable units and attain an average GPA of 2.6 or more in those units. Students are required to attend at least two TAG workshops before transfer and to submit their TAG agreement at least two semesters before transfer and not more than six semesters before transfer.
