Vanishing Point

Brazilian-born artist Valeska Soares creates environments that deal with the dichotomies of space and intellect through bodily sensations. Currently based in New York, Soares has worked with a fascinating array of materials over the past decade, including wax, perfume, and flowers, that both elicit the senses and evoke buried memories. Valeska Soares: Vanishing point, on view at MCA Downtown beginning July 25, takes its title from Soares' recent sculptural installation, Vanishing Point, one of the two major installations featured in the exhibition.

Vanishing Point is composed of fifteen stainless steel containers arranged on the floor in a maze-like composition. Each container is filled to the rim with an amber-colored solution of oil and perfume. With time, the perfume evaporates and the space becomes enveloped by an into-xicatingly rich smell.

This exhibition was organized by MCA Senior Curator Elizabeth Armstrong. At 7:30 p.m. on July 24 at MCA Downtown, the artist and Brazilian curator and art critic, Ivo Mesquita, will present a dialogue on the work.

"The Spirits of Havana"

WorldBeat Productions is proud to present "The Spirits of Havana" as part of the "Year of the Orishas / African Spirits in America". Along with their bodies being brought for sale into a life of misery, they also brought their souls and religion.

The workshops will cover all aspects of Afro-Cuban Jazz with a special focus on rhythm. They will begin by performing a classic Afro-Cuban piece and taking it apart to show the role that each instrument plays in the group sound. A question period will follow and the final phase of the workshop will be a (jam session) featuring the workshop participants. For more information and tickets, call 230-1190.
