Stevens to Host Celebration in Honor of the Installation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway Signs

Councilman George Stevens extends an invitation to the public to celebrate the unveiling of a Martin Luther King, Jr. overhead freeway sign on Monday, January 18, 1999, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. "I'm happy to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his birthday as we celebrate the end of the sign installation. Dr. King was an exceptional leader in the American civil rights movement and I am glad he is being honored for his contributions."

This sign unveiling marks the beginning of the final phase of the King freeway signs. There will be 46 ground mounted signs and 39 overhead signs being installed on the westerly 10 miles of the King Freeway from the I-5 interchange to the I-125 connector. The sign changes will be completed by June 1999.

Highway 94 was named the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway was named in 1989. However, funding was not allocated for the signs to change at that time. On July 1, 1996, the City Council unanimously approved funding and installation for the signs.

"I want to thank the Council for coming together and helping me make this important change possible" Councilman Stevans said.

Councilman Stevans has been working toward the establishing signs designating the freeway as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway since he was elected to office in 1991.
