MANA is a national organization dedicated to the advancement of Mexican-American and Latina women of all ages and promotes the equal participation of Latinas in social, educational, economic, and political processes.

MANA of San Diego County has over 200 members and established its scholarship program eight years ago as a way of helping Latina women achieve their educational goals. The scholarship honors Sylvia Chavez, a MANA member and community leader, who was committed to the organization's vision and goals. More than 70 Latina women have received financial assistance toward their education since 1991, when the first scholarships were awarded.

MANA of San Diego County also sponsors the Hermanitas Program for young Latina women. This one-on-one mentoring program provides educational workshops, career exploration and academic tutoring by MANA members. One graduate of the Hermanitas Program will also receive a scholarship.

Individuals interested in contributing to the Sylvia Chavez Memorial Scholarship fund may do so by sending contributions to MANA of San Diego County at P.O. Box 3159, San Diego CA 92103. Donations are tax deductible.
