San Diego Indoor Meet Back on Track January 23

The San Diego Indoor Games track meet returns after a 12-year hiatus at the San Diego Sports Arena on Saturday, January 23, 1999. This event was sponsored for many years by Jack in the Box and in later years, Michelob.

The meet, initiated in 1966, was one of the most exciting undercover track meets in the world. In a 22-year span, the legendary Sports Arena fast boards produced numerous top performances, including 42 world indoor records and 18 American records by such legends as Eamonn Coghlan, Steve Scott, Lee Evans, Jim Ryun, Evelyn Ashford, Henry Rono, Steve Prefontaine, Mary Decker, Doug Padilla and Johnny Gray and field event stars Willie Banks and Dwight Stones.

Coghlan's 3:50.6 mile record set in 1981 is still the third-fastest indoor time in history, and Scott's 3:15.8 in the same year still stands as a U.S. record.

"We're enthusiastic about returning this event to San Diego where we had for many years what many considered the finest indoor meet in the world, said promoter and event founder, Al Franken.

"This will be the wave of the future, with the facility (San Diego Sports Arena) joining forces with the event organizer to create a business partnership that benefits everyone. We are confident that we can quickly build this track meet into one of the top indoor meets in the country," stated Sports Arena General Manager Ernie Hahn II.

"I grew up watching the sport's biggest names compete, as they headed each winter to San Diego aiming for records, said Don Franken, the meet's co-chairman. "The Sports Arena's support of this event is overwhelming and we are confident that we can put together all elements necessary for a quality track meet in San Diego," said Don Franken.

The meet will feature a day-long session for youth (age group) and high school athletes, followed by the Invitational events at 7 p.m., showcasing world class athletes and top collegiate programs.
