National City Effective July 1, 1998, a new state law requires all children entering 7th grade to receive a series of Hepatitis B shot.
Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The infection usually occurs among adolescents or young adults and can cause some serious liver problems such as cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer.
The vaccine shots are proven to be safe. Since the Hepatitis B three-series shots must be spread over several months, it is important to start early enough to allow time to have the series completed.
Children who have not started the Hep B series will not be allowed to enroll.
Very soon, the state may also required a second MMR immunization which protects one from measles, mumps, and rubella.
The state has designated January 11-15 as Pre-Teen Vaccine week to ensure that all kids have their needed shots before start of the next schoolyear.
Operation Samahan Clinic located at 2743 Highland Avenue, National City will be offering free Hep B immunization shots during the Pre-Teen Vaccine Week.
