"The Thousandth Night"

One actor, thirty-eight characters and a thousand tales fill this magical, sometimes touching comedy of danger and delirium set in a world upside-down as a lone survivor attempts a daring escape armed with only his imagination.

The Thousandth Night features the internationally award winning performance of Ron Campbell. This San Diego premiere opens at North Coast Repertory Theatre on January 9, and runs through February 14, 1999. Ticket prices range from $16.00 - $18.00. "Culture Crawlers"

On January 9, 1999, 2ND SATURDAY "culture crawlers" will have an opportunity to take a free art lesson where visitors of all ages will be able to watch professional artists from 10 NORTH, an artists group, demonstrate watercoloring techniques and then actually do some painting themselves.

The event will take place at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 142 Grand Avenue, from 2 to 4 PM. 2nd Saturday is a free, monthly, self-guided tour through Escondido's expanding cultural district. Visitors can stroll through open galleries and studies, watch a glass blowing demonstration or enjoy outdoor dining at restaurants in the downtown area. "Flute, Guitar Trio"

Lori Bell's trio will give a flute and guitar classical and jazz concert at 2 p.m. on January 9 in the Rosemary Lane Galeria, South Chula Vista Library, 389 Orange Ave. Bell will be performing at the library with David and Francesca Savage.

Bell's latest recording, "Interplay," was nominated for four Grammy Awards. Her first album, "Love Will Win" earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1983. Her music has been called remarkable for its interpretive brilliance and craftsmanship. This special concert, sponsored by Friends of the South Chula Vista Library, is free to the public.

 

"Skydiving Demonstration to Kick Off"

The Parachute Industry Association (PIA) Symposium `99 will kick off this coming Sunday, January 10 with a professional skydiving demonstration by a variety of local and national professional skydivers. The US Navy Leap Frogs, Skydiving Innovations Parachute Team, renowned freefall photographers and PIA board members will perform this thrilling show at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley at 12:45 p.m.

All performers will touch down in the parking lot at the rear of the hotel. Flags, banners and freefall smoke will all compliment the performances, including skydivers towing in the PIA flag and a giant American flag. Immediately following the skydiving demonstration, the exhibit hall will open. The public is invited to view over 100 booths and learn about the sport of skydiving. "Deeply There"

The University of California, San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present the first production of 1999, "Deeply There" (stories of a neighborhood). The nationally acclaimed Joe Goode Performance Group will perform their latest work for TWO NIGHTS ONLY on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 at 8 p.m. in the Mandell Weiss Theatre, on the campus of UCSD.

Joe Goode is known for his deeply physical, high velocity dancing and his distinct choreographic mixture of text, movement, and humor. "Big Band `99"

Big Band `99 The Fabulous Dorseys comes to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 1999. This is a new multimedia tribute starring the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra conducted by trombonist Jim Miller and featuring Jeff Collins, alto sax, in the role of Jimmy Dorsey. Nancy Knorr recreates the memorable hits of Helen O'Con-nell, and the Pied Pipers, the number one vocal group of its day and the featured vocal group of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, also will be featured.

The Philharmonic Wind Quintet

The first concert in the San Diego Public Library concert series will be held Sunday, January 10 at 2:30 p.m. Program will include works by Mozart, Reicha, Agay, Gersh-win & Joplin. The program will be held in the Third Floor auditorium of the Central Library located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego.

The concert is free and open to the public. Free parking is available at the lot adjacent to the Library on Broadway and 8th. In addition, parking meters are not enforced on Sundays. For further information, please call the Library's Art and Music Department at 236-5810.

 

The Spirit Chorale Returns

Following their success in years past, the Spirit Chorale returns once again to St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla on Saturday, January 16th at 7:30 p.m. In celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr., their program will include gospel, spiritual, folk and jazz music.

Assisting on numerous recordings, this outstanding group of professional musicians has performed with such artists as Wynton Marsallis, James Cleavland, Della Resse, Dionne Warwick and Ray Charles. Adult tickets are available for only $10 and may be purchased in advance at St. James or by phone. Students and children are admitted free. Music of Dreams and Fantasies

The romance of "Dreams and Fantasies" highlights a light classical mood for the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Sunday-Tuesday, January 10-12. The music on this program will transport the audience to distant lands, times and places.

Performances are schedules for January 10 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido at 2 and 7 PM at the Chamber Orch-estra's exciting new downtown venue, 4th & B; January 11, 8 PM at La Jolla's Sherwood Auditorium; and January 12, 8 PM at Fair-banks Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe. Single ticket prices range from $12-$25 for the Escondido Series; $30 for La Jolla and Twilight Series; and $50 at Fairbanks Ranch, with discounts available for seniors and students. The Heat of Argentine Tango

Be transported to the steamy South American world of the Argentine tango when Tango Buenos Aires lands in Escondido Wed., Jan 13, at 8 PM at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Tango Buenos Aires dances the history of a passionate art form featuring a live tango orchestra, vocalists and a company of 25 tango dancers.

Tango Buenos Aires features the evolution of the passionate South American dance. Exotic rhythms from the orchestra, as well as singers, compliment the brassy and elaborate choreography. Tickets are now on sale at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido ticket office, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd., prices range from $22 to $47. San Diego Boat Show

The 1999 San Diego Boat will drop anchor at the San Diego Convention Center and Marriott Marina January 7 - 10, 1999. The four-day show will feature the latest marine industry gear, from power-boats to personal watercraft, as well as educational seminars covering boating, fishing and other water-based activities. The San Diego Boat Show offers fun for the entire family, with a special section dedicated to kids age 12 and under. Admission to the children's area is free and activities are designed to educate youngsters while entertaining them as well.

In addition to the activities in the children's area, kids are invited to build a homemade mini-boat and bring it to the show for free admittance for themselves and their parents. Boat Show hours are Thursday, January 7 and Friday, January 8, from noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday, January 9, from 10 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, January 10, from 11 to 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages six to 12 and free for children under six. Keyboard Magic

The Athenaeum showcases some of the jazz world's most outstanding keyboard artists, the library announces its new series, Jazz Piano III, taking place in the music room of the Athenaeum on four Thursday nights in January and February, 1999. The series features four internationally-renowned jazz pianists making rare San Diego area appearances.

Scheduled appearances are as followed: Thursday, January 7, Kenny Werner, solo piano; Thursday, January 14, Eric Reed Trio, Eric Reed, piano; Thursday, January 28, Brad Mehldau, piano, and Derek Oles, bass; Thursday, February 4, Fred Hersch, solo piano. The Papal Portraits of 1953

The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (MCA) will present Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 1953 from January 17 through March 28, at MCA in La Jolla located at 700 Prospect Street.

In 1953, British artist Francis Bacon painted nine "pope paintings," the best known of which is his Study After Velázquez, Portrait of Pope Innocent X. This work and eight paintings composing the series Study for Portrait I-VIII are considered among the most important paintings of Bacon's career, as well as of the post-War period. Midsummer Night's Dream

San Diego Junior Theatre presents "A Midsummer Night's Dream", at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park from January 8 through January 24. Show times are Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission prices are $5 - $7 for seniors and children under the age of 12, $7 - $9 for adults.
