Councilman Juan Vargas, who is having trouble convincing his own Democratic party to support his bid for the 79th Assembly District has decided to meddle in the campaign of Toni Atkins who is seeking the 3rd council district seat. That endorsement along with endorsement from the Gay and Lesbian Times, may be the `kiss of death for Mr. Atkins. Joining the field for the seat are: Daniel Beeman, John Hartley, Steve McWilliams, and Gerri Stryker. If you're interested, a candidates forum will be held tonight (Friday 28th, 7:00 p.m. Joyce Beers Community Center, Vermont Street north of University Avenue.
Dwayne Crenshaw (D), African American received the endorsement of the California League of Conservation Voters and the California Democratic Party surprising Councilman Juan Vargas who, it would have been expected to have been endorsed by them. It is supposed to be the "Year of the Hispanic" and all those Hispanics now hold powerful positions with the Party. Crenshaw is running for the 79th assembly district seat which include parts of San Diego, Chula Vista, Lemon Groove, and all of National City. Assemblywoman Denise Moreno Ducheny, who is termed out, evidentially didn't pull too hard to have her friend `Vargas' supported by the Democratic Party!
Running once again for public office as a " write in candidate" is Petra E. Barajas. She will try for the 79th Assembly District seat. She is identifying herself as a `leader and fighter for the people.' Running as a `write in candidate' is a hard row to hoe. But at least she is persistent.
Jim Bell wants to be the "Mayor of San Diego." He launched his campaign by attacking the BIA, for building houses that "threatened" people's health, and the long term life support / economic interests of the city, region and planet! Hummmmmm should be an interesting race when he tangles with Ron Roberts, currently a Supervisor, who is heavily bank-rolled by the same folks: the BIA!
Shucks! It should be fun in the 77th Assembly District race... The race has hardly gotten going and two of the Republican candidates are already slinging mud all over the place. La Mesa City Councilman Jake La Suer has taken dead-aim at Penny Halgren. Jake says "Penny is full of hot air!" She has anemic local support! Halgren has financed her campaign with Credit card loans! Qué pasó with the Republican 11th Commandment??? Mud-slinging is part for the course for those East-County folks.
Chula Vista City Council has attracted Greg Alabado, former Naval Chef Warrant Officer and Public Transit Administrator, enough for him to throw his hat into the ring. Greg will be joining eight others who want to assume the 3rd District seat. Should be a fun race with Filipino, Mexican, Asian, Anglo Pacific Islander mix in the district! Poor old Anglo-Europeans are settled with one main candidate Jerry Rindone who has been there, done it, has turned enough voters to make it problematical, people want to see another Rindone era in the city. Alabado is a new face in the political mix.
David Oakey (L) is in the race for the 76th Assembly District. David wants to stop the avalanche of `special legislation' & regulations that routinely take up the legislators time. The people's business is left out of the legislative process. Oakey wants to turn off the spigot on `taxation.' Can't see anything wrong with that!
What area of our county has the most Libertarians running for office? Rancho Bernardo! They have six Libertarians running for office. All other areas of San Diego have at least two. That's about as close as you can come without actually admitting you were a Newt Gingrich Republican.
2400 Democrats ran for delegates, at the Gore-Bradley Democratic Caucuses. 15,000 Democrats attended and voted for them! Unfortunately neither Mr. Gore or Bradley would commit to appointing a Mexican /American, Latino, or Hispanic to one of the openings on the Supreme Court that will become available to the next sitting president! Come on RAZA get political.
