South Bay physicians Renato Masilungan, M.D., Charlie Johnson, M.D., Irnieo D. Tiangco, M.D., and Maria Flora Trimor, M.D., recently became primary care providers with the UCSD Senior Health Plan, introduced by UCSD Healthcare last year. UCSD Senior Health Plan is part of the federally-sponsored Medicare Choices Demonstration Project designed to provide Medicare beneficiaries with expanded choices among types of managed care plans and to test alternative payment methods.
Enrollment in the physician-designed UCSD Senior Health Plan allows Medicare beneficiaries an option to see many UCSD Medical Group specialists without first obtaining a referral from their primary care physician. Also, the UCSD Senior Health Plan has developed a case management program that is dedicated to the management of high risk patients.
"It is extremely exciting to be a part of this program because it is a non-profit organization that focuses on caring for its members," said Dr. Masilungan. "This program is administered by physicians rather than an outside insurance company and, by adding more primary care providers from the community, the plan will be available to even more Medicare beneficiaries than before."
UCSD Senior Health Plan is one of just 25 organizations nationwide selected by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) of the Department of Health and Human Services to participate in this unique program. UCSD was the only organization selected in the State of California
