RARE BIRDS OF CHINA
A unique exhibition that will encourage visitors to compare and contrast Western and Chinese depictions of Chinese birds, opens this Saturday, Feb. 13 at the San Diego Museum of Art and will run through April 18.
The exhibition brings together watercolors by the Canadian artist J. Fenwick Lansdowne and Chinese birds as they appear in objects from the San Diego Museum of Art's permanent collection of Chinese art. Visitors to the exhibition will be encouraged to visit the San Diego Zoo for an upclose-and-personal look at living Chinese birds. For more information, call (619) 232-7931.
SHE LOVES ME
Miracle Theatre Productions, in residence at the Theatre in Old Town, is pleased to announce it's production. In honor of the Valentine's Day season, it will present two concert readings of Bock and Harnick's romantic musical-comedy "She Loves Me" on February 15 and February 22, at 7 p.m. at The Theatre in Old Town.
"She Loves Me" will be produced in an informal concert reading format. With scripts in hand, the actors will focus on the script and score without set or costume enhancements. Tickets are $10 for general admission seating and they can be purchased by calling 688-2494.
Award-Winning Actress Coming to City College
Veteran actress Virginia Capers and her performance troupe will entertain Feb. 19 at 8 p.m., in the San Diego City College Theatre, located at 1450 "C" Street between 14th and 15th.
Winner of a Best Actress Tony award for her role in "Raisin," Capers is also a singer, producer and director and received the Paul Ro-beson Pioneer Award from the Black American Cinema society and the NAACP's Image Award for theatrical excellence. Her appearance promises an evening of theatrical delights and surprises. For details, call 230-2512.
SONGS OF THE CENTURY
An annual variety show and dinner/dance party celebrating the music of the 20th century, will be presented by the San Diego Choraleers adult mixed chorus on Saturday, February 20, at the Patrick Henry High School Auditorium, located at 6702 Wandermere Drive, San Carlos.
Dinner will be catered and served by the Old World Restaurant, located in the Gaslamp Quarter, beginning at 7 p.m. preceded by the show at 4:30 p.m. Dancing provided by a D.J. GALA CONCERT
The Spring 1999 Concert Series of the First Unitarian Universalist Church will open with a special extravaganza in celebration of the church's 125th anniversary on Saturday, February 20 at 7 p.m.
This gala event, celebrating the role of music in the life of the church over twelve decades, will feature a variety of instrumental and choral works, highlighted by the premiere of a choral anthem commissioned specially for the anniversary by noted composer Adolphus Hailstork. A suggested donation of $8 per person will be accepted at the door. The church is located at 4190 Front Street, across from the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

FLORIGRAPHY CELEBRATION
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park and the Boosters of Old Town will host the annual Florigraphy (Valentine's Day) Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 14th from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The event, parking and the museums are FREE and open to the public.
The event will provide park visitors an opportunity to experience a Valentine's Day celebration of the 1800's. Craft and skills demonstrations, historic games and an old fashioned melodrama will give visitors a chance to participate. Families are encouraged to bring picnic lunches and a camera. There will be many activities for children.
"Batman: Discovery of a Moche Warrior from Ancient Peru"
Renowned archaeologist Alana Cordy-Collins, professor of anthropology at the University of San Diego and the Museum's Curator of Latin American Archaeology, will present a slide-illustrated lecture about the July, 1998 discovery of a 3rd-century A.D. tomb of a high status pre-Columbian Peruvian lord.
During her presentation, she will discuss other details known about the tomb and its occupant, an adult male who died between the age of 18 and 22. In addition, she will discuss two other important discoveries made at the side: a miniature replica of the tomb found close by and the relationship between Batman and the 1997 discoveries at the same site. A Rare Appearance
Clarissa Pinkola Estés,
Ph.D., will make a rare appearance in San Diego, Feb. 19-21. Dr.
Estés is an acclaimed poet, Jungian psychoanalyst, scholar,
and author of a best-selling, eleven volume audio collection,
as well as the author of international best-seller, Women who
Run With The Wolves. Dr. Estés has published two other
books, The Faithful Gardener and the Gift of Story. Her
next book, The Dangerous Old Woman, Myths and Stories of the
Wise Woman Archetype, will be published soon.

LATIN JAZZ
Colombian born woodwind virtuoso Justo Almario combines his sweet tenor and soprano sax with the Brazilian jazz music of Rique Pantoja to bring a brilliant Latin Jazz concert to Oceanside Public Library Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The concert will take place in the Oceanside Civic Center Community Rooms adjacent to the library.
Four of the recordings Almario performed on in 1994 were nominated for Grammys. The two performances will benefit the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library; suggested donation is $6.00. Please call the library at 966-4104 for additional information on this and all other programs and exhibits.
Quebec's La Bottine Souriante to Perform
Quebec's La Bottine Souriante, one of the most innovative and uplifting bands playing contemporary roots music anywhere, will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Price Center Ballroom at the University of California, San Diego.
The hearty jigs and jubilant reels of the traditional violin, accordion and guitar ensemble are joined with the powerful brass sounds of trombones, saxophones and trumpets, giving La Bottine Souriante a dynamic mix of folksy hoe-down, big band and a healthy contribution of Irish influence.
