Doll Show

The San Diego Doll Show and Sale will be held on Feb. 19th at the Scottish Rite Center, 1895 Camino del Rio South, San Diego. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, children under 12 are FREE. There will be a special exhibit, door prizes and door stringing.

 

"Football, Crime & Glamor"

Mystery and crime writer Gary Phillips takes a break from instructing at the annual Southern California Writer's Conference in San Diego to discuss his new crime novel, The Jook, at the Malcolm X Branch of the San Diego Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Set in the world of professional football in L.A., The Jook is a story of sports, crime and glamor involving players, crooked lawyers and L.A. gangsta rappers. Malcolm X Library is located at 5148 Market Street.

 

"Bob Marley Celebration 2000"

Bob Marley Celebration 2000 takes place Monday, Feb. 21st at 1 p.m. at the San Diego Sports Arena. This Black History Month Celebration is a tribute to the Reggae Martyrs: Joe Higgs, Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown, and all of the fallen soldiers of Reggae music. Featuring will be Michael Rose, Barrington Levy, Johnny Osbourne, Mystic Revealers, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Beenie Man, Yami Bolo, Anthony B, Devonte & Tanto Metro, plus international food and crafts fairs. Palabradas

Sunday, Feb. 20th the Cen-tro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego is going to have its first Palabradas monthly reading/performance series from 3-5 p.m. We still have some time slots for performers, poetry, dance, canto, and theater skits. Palabradas is a monthly artistic series that will provide a venue for new and professional artists and artistic groups to demonstrate expressions of Chicana/o, Indigenous, Latina/o, and Mexican arts and culture.

 

"Artists for Amnesty"

On Sunday, February 20th, San Diego's most provocative and renown musicians will gather and perform at a concert to benefit a local chapter of Amnesty International. This year's event will feature music by Gregory Page and Frank Drennan of local hit band the "Rug Burns", Berkeley/Hart, Harmon Tipton, popular folk singer Cindy Lee Berryhill, and the poetry of Lizzie Wan. Guest speaker will be Nestor Fantini, a former prisoner of conscience from Argentina.

The benefit concert will begin at 7 PM at the Ould Sod, located at 3733 Adams Avenue in North Park. Door admission price is $7.00 All proceeds from admissions will benefit Amnesty International local chapter 137. For information on how to join, call 221-7130.

 

The Last Supper

On Wednesday, February 23 at 6 p.m., the Malcolm X Branch Library will screen the Cuban film The Last Supper (La Ultima Cena) as part of the three-month long international film series presented by the San Diego Public Library, Frame by Frame: Building Communities Through Cinema.

Last Supper is a startlingly beautiful masterpiece of Cuban cinema based on a true incident in Cuban history about a pious slaveholder who decides to improve his soul and instruct his slaves in the glories of Christianity by inviting 12 of them to participate in a re-enactment of Jesus' Last Supper. Grammy Awards Presentation

Santana, Backstreet Boys, TLC and Ricky Martin have been selected as performers for the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards telecast set for February 23 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The announcement of the Elton John tribute follows the selection of the entertainer as recipient of the Grammy Legend Award and his scheduled performance on the show. The presentation will be hosted by Rosie O'Donnell and televised by the CBS Television Network.

 

"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"

Oldsters, youngsters, aspiring artists, fans and the stars they idolize from the 1930's to the 1990's will gather once again in regal fashion at this years Third Annual National and International San Diego Black Film Festival from Feb. 25 - 27. Festivities will begin with a special Children's Screening on the 25th at the San Diego Community Concourse, 202 C Street, San Diego, featuring several child celebrities such as local personality Willie Green, Arjay Smith from TV's Nickelodeon's "The Journey of Allen Strange" and Ashley Clark from ABC's "The Hughleys".

Then, the Grand Gala for the adults will blast off into the night at the Regal Cinema, Rancho del Rey 1025 Tierra del Rey Chula Vista, with a 1930's & 40's theme Black Tie Gala featuring a very special salute to our heroic Military service members. Stars expected to attend include actress and daughter of Muhammad Ali, actor Morris Chestnut, world famous entertainer Lou Rawls, actress Dawn Lewis from TV's "Different World" to name a few. "Two Years Before The Mast"

The San Diego Maritime Museum presents the one-man theatrical performance "Two Years Before The Mast," for three nights on February 25-27 at 6 and 8 p.m. shows. This has become a wintertime tradition on the shop, drawing large crowds of all ages. It tells the harrowing tale of Dana's trip around Cape Horn in the bring Pilgrim. It describes his participation in the hide trade in rugged, primitive places such as early San Diego, Monterey and San Francisco. It was the first book on sailoring during the great Age of Sail written by a common seaman which was mandatory to read for every miner, sailor, or emigrant headed west for decades to come. Kuumba Fest

The African-American Council of San Diego Repertory Theatre will host The Eight Annual Kuumba Fest during Feb. 18-20 at the Lyceum in Horton Plaza. The festival, which takes its name from the Swahili word meaning creativity, is a celebration of African-American art, music, song, dance and culture. The theme on opening night is Black to Beautiful: Body, Mind and Soul. It will include a ceremony honoring 12 positive role models. Honorees include Voices of Fulfillment choir director Edward Baltrip, police officer Lt. Melvin Maxwell, radio personality Tyari Howard, attorney Randa Trapp and businessman Matthews W. Brown.

The evening will continue with beautifully staged royal court tracing African history with ancient pharaohs, kings and queens coming to life on stage, the electrifying Teye Sa Thiosanne African Drum and Dance Company and a community youth play called I'm a Great Somebody.
