Mary Frances Berry, chairperson of the United States Civil Rights Commission, will address other politically influential women Saturday, March 25 in Riverside at "Women's Conference 2000: Forging an Extraordinary Century for Women."
Sponsored by the Women's Resource Center at the University of California, Riverside, this fourth annual conference offers politically-focused panel discussions, workshops, exhibits and a rally called "50/50 by 2020" that calls for equal representation in political life for women by the year 2020. All sessions will be held at the Holiday Inn Select, 3400 Market St., Riverside.
Workshop topics include how to run for political office; presentation skills; leadership; demystifying gay and lesbian issues; health for success; and preparation for Beijing+5, the global conference on women.
Berry, who is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a former Assistant Secretary for Education for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, will give the keynote address.
The featured speaker is Anita Perez Ferguson, author of "A Passion for Politics" and "Encouraging Women in Leadership" and the immediate past president of the National Women's Political Caucus.
Aileen Hernandez and Marilyn Fowler, both leaders of The California Women's Agenda, will also speak.
The night before, the UCR Women's Resource Center will induct three local women into the Women's Hall of Fame during a ceremony and dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, March 24 at the Registrar of Voters office, 2724 Gateway Dr., Riverside.
"This is a conference for people from all walks of life," said Adrienne Sims, director of the UCR Women's Resource Center. "In this, an election year, it is a groundbreaking event for politically-motivated women and girls, those serving in leadership capacities, and others, to meet, learn and share information as agents of change."
Registration for Saturday workshops costs $40 per person with discounts for UCR staff, students and alumni. Businesses wishing to set up exhibit tables at the fair will be charged $50, while non-profit groups can exhibit at no charge.
Individual tickets for the Hall of Fame Dinner and Ceremony cost $75, with package deals available that include event sponsorship, exhibit tables or recognition in the program materials. Online materials, for participants, exhibitors, and sponsors can be accessed at http://www.students.ucr.edu/wrc
