David Agosto

Former City College Student Returns as Interim President

David J. Agosto, a former student and baseball star at San Diego City College in the late 1960s, will return to his alma mater March 1 as interim college president. Since leaving City College and transferring to the University of San Diego on a baseball scholarship, Agosto has built an impressive record of accomplishments in more than 25 years of community college administration.

The San Diego native, who has served as vice-president of student development and services at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon since 1995, also served as vice president of student services for seven years at Los Angeles City College and six years in a key student services position in Sacramento with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

While in Sacramento, he developed the first internship program in the State Capitol for community college students and played a major role in developing programs to improve financial aid services for community college students statewide.

"I am excited about returning to my alma mater as interim college president in the community in which I was born and raised," Agosto said. "I was raised around the corner from City College in Barrio Logan for a while and then in Clairemont."

He has deep roots in San Diego, including his grandmother Laura Rodriguez, who died in 1994 but whose image remains on a mural in Chicano Park-the park she fought to establish in 1970.

Augustine Gallego, chancellor of the San Diego Community College District, which includes San Diego City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and the six Continuing Education Centers, said "Mr. Agosto has been a tireless advocate for students and an outstanding administrator who understands the needs of urban college students. He will be a tremendous asset to City College and the downtown community."

In 1968, Agosto transferred from San Diego City College to the University of San Diego, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1970. From USD, he transferred to San Diego State University, where he earned a master's degree in social work in 1972.

Agosto lives in Bonita with his wife, Maria, and their six children, Brooke, Christopher, Jennifer, Joseph, Julianna and Viana.
