Monterey Jazz Festival Announces 30th Annual High School Jazz Competition

The Monterey Jazz Festival has announced its 30th Annual High School Jazz Competition, to be held at the Monterey Fairgrounds, April 7-9, 2000. High school big bands, combos, vocal groups and individual musicians are invited to compete for cash prizes, trophies, scholarships and spot on the 2000 Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band. Showdown in Seattle: Five Days that Shook the WTO is a five-part video series that features an on-the-ground perspective and analysis of people's participation in Seattle during the World Trade Organization meeting. The tape includes remarkable footage of popular participation, police repression and resistance.

A Community Meeting on the Ballpark District

The Centre City Development Corporation in conjunction with East Village Association will be hosting a community meeting to provide a status report on the Ballpark redevelopment project, Tuesday, February 15, 5:30 pm to 7 pm, at the Clarion Hotel, 660 K Street. Parking at the hotel will be $2.00

Braille Institute to Offer Outreach Classes in National City

The Braille Institute is offering free classes in National City for individuals with vision loss. The classes will teach independent living skills, will be held Wednesday from 1 pm to 3 pm at Kimball Tower/Lounge 1317 "D" Ave., National City. RSVP by calling 858-452-1111.

 

Friends of the South Chula Vista Library Book Sale Set for Feb. 19

The Friends of the South Chula Vista Library will hold their 25 cent Spring Book Sale on Feb. 19 from 10 am to 2 pm in cafe area at the South Chula Vista Library, 389 Orange Ave. A wide variety of used books, magazines and audio visual material will be sold.

 

Attorneys Offer Free Legal Advice

San Diego Public Library is hosting "Law Day 2000." More than a dozen attorneys will be offering free legal advice during this second annual event the attorneys will offer counsel on several areas of law. Topics include family law, bankruptcy law, personal injury law, consumer protection, medical malpractice, civil litigation and more. This event will take place February 19 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on the third floor, of the San Diego Central Library, located at 820 E Street, downtown.

 

Income Tax Assistance

Income tax professionals will be at Norman Park Senior Center from February 2 - April 14 to assist seniors with their tax forms. No appointment is necessary. Assistance is given on a first come-first service basis on Mondays from 8 am to 12 pm. and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 2 pm. For more information call 691-5086.

 

USD Opens Tax Clinic To Help Low-Income Taxpayers

The University of San Diego School of Law has opened a low-income tax clinic to assist residents in San Diego and Imperial county communities. Low-income residents and small-business owners can receive help with issues such as tax exemptions and dependents, the earned income tax credit, credit for child and dependent care expenses, business expenses and offers-in-compromise.

There is no charge for the services provided. Services are offered where income is not greater than 250 percent of federal poverty guidelines. For a household of one, the income limit is $20,600. For a family of five, the limit is $48,800.

The clinic is open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Evening appointments are also available. Call 619-260-7470 for an appointment. A full-time Spanish-speaking translator is also on staff.
