A Scam to Remember

This is a personal account of a widespread fraud attempt happening throughout México. Last Saturday, December 13, at 3 PM, my distraught sister called and told me: Brother, brace yourself; I am bearing bad tidings. “FX, your son just called me from a prison where he is being held in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The Mexican police captured him. Upset and almost unintelligibly, FX told me he was involved in a car accident whereby he killed a pregnant woman in San Diego, CA.” FX told my sister he was turning the telephone to an officer, since his allowed time to talk had expired. A new voice, identifying himself as commander Clemente Gabriel López Juárez, carried on and told my sister FX called her was because he was unable to get hold of me. He gave my sister the telephone number 33/3904-2292, suggesting her to contact me to call him.

Comparto este recuento personal de intento de estafa generalizado en México. El sábado pasado, 13 de diciembre, a las 3 de la tarde, me llamó muy afligida mi hermana y me dijo: “Hermano, prepárate, te tengo malas noticias. Acaba de hablarme tu hijo Francisco Xavier desde una prisión en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Lo capturó la policía mexicana. Turbado y en forma casi ininteligible, FX me dijo había estado involucrado en un accidente automovilístico en el cual había matado a una mujer embarazada, en San Diego y habíase dado a la fuga”. FX pasó la llamada a un oficial, pues su tiempo de teléfono había expirado. Continuó una nueva voz, identificándose como el comandante Clemente Gabriel López Juárez quien dijo a mi hermana FX la había llamado a ella al no haberme conseguido a mí. Le dio a mi hermana el número telefónico 33/3904-2292 y sugirió me contactara y yo lo hiciera con él.

Algunas estadísticas que acompañan a la palabra “latino”, nos asocian con un bajo índice de alfabetismo, con un alto índice de pobreza y algunos otros aspectos que tienen que ver directamente con una parte de la realidad. La mayor parte de nuestra gente ha escapado de la pobreza en distintas naciones, pero cuando llega a los Estados Unidos, la realidad no cambia de la noche a la mañana, toma tiempo, sacrificio, y a veces, una generación entera para superar un comienzo sin oportunidades.
Rotary Club of San Marcos Builds Home in México
North County – The Rotary Club of San Marcos recently gave a family in Tijuana México a gift for the holidays – Their Own Home.
Rotarian Joe Madrigal has been the Project Chair. In addition to the Rotarians, students from the San Marcos High School Interact Club, which is sponsored by the Rotary club, joined the Rotary club. This leadership club worked side by side with Rotarians, and family members to make this dream come true for the Mendoza-Ventura family. This year, Mr. Madrigal also organized for members of the Rotary Club of Tijuana to participate that day in the house raising. Future joint San Marcos-Tijuana Rotary Club projects are being discussed.
La Paradoja de la Captura de Saddam

No cabe duda, la aprehensión de Saddam Hussein ha despertado un gran clima de triunfalismo dentro y fuera de los Estados Unidos. Para los iraquíes, ver al viejo “zorro” de Bagdad humillado, al punto de ser afeitado por el propio “demonio”, no estaba prescrito ni en las tiras cómicas de aquel país, ni tampoco estaba contemplado en la imaginación del incrédulo. Y qué decir en los Estados Unidos. A excepción de algunos apologistas de la dictadura y formas de gobierno de “mano dura” –que siempre existen—, todos mostraban un júbilo inusitado. Esto fue claramente patentizado por el Presidente George W. Bush cuando señalaba que “el mundo es mejor sin ti (Saddam)”.

An Open Letter
I am the General Manager of the railroad between Tijuana and Tecate and my company is Ferrocarriles Peninsulares del Noroeste (FPN). We are a sister company of Carrizo Gorge Railway, the firm that has the operating contract in México as well as on a portion of the rail line that has been out of service for 20 years in eastern San Diego County. My office is located along the railroad tracks as they enter/leave México for the United States. I guess many people, including most in Tijuana, would say that they enter México from the United States, so it is a matter of perspective.
