Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club member
Pat Landis, PhD., of Encinitas, spearheaded a Holiday dinner and
gift giving party at Coco's Restaurant for a dozen mostly Latin
American children from Buena Vista Elementary School, in Carlsbad.
Each Rotarian "adopted" a child for the evening; bought them a special present; provided transportation if needed; entertained them at a "Shrimp Strips, French Fries and pizza" dinner; and made sure the child got home safely. Rotarians without "adoptees" also provided presents so each child would get at least three. Rotarian Bob Fenner, of San Marcos, dressed as Santa, presented each child with the gifts.
The clown, Fun-B (Jane Findley), painted the children's faces with designs of the their choice. Kevin Viner (only 15 years of age) enthralled the children with his magic tricks and brought smiles to their faces. The well-known entertainer, Alexander Armenta, of Spring Valley, played his guitar and sang Latin American songs.
The Principal, Jose DeAnda, and his secretary, Nancy, gave special cooperation. Landis' committee included Mary Eacott, of Vista, finances, and Juan Aguila of Carlsbad who handled calls from Spanish speaking parents.
