San Diego Latino fitness trainer, Jorge Maurer, will be a special guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Monday December 14, 1998 (check local TV listings). The show was taped on November 19, 1998 live at Harpo Studios in Chicago. Maurer will be sharing with Oprah how her "Angel Network" inspired him to create his fitness website network, including the internet's first Spanish fitness website www.BuenaFormaFisica.com and how he has virtually coached over half a million people without any cost.
"I am really happy about being the first Latin fitness trainer to offer a Spanish-language `aptitud física' website," said Maurer, who's fluent in Spanish and was born in Mexico City. "Because Latinos need to workout too, and there's not much on the internet for them to access."
Jorge Maurer, interested in helping as many people as possible to get in shape, says that Winfrey's Angel Network inspired him to develop a total of five internet fitness websites. Originally he thought just a few hundred people might visit the web-sites, but on average over 66,000 people from the world over visit the sites each month, almost half of them to the Spanish-language site. "Today I reach more people in a day," Maurer says, "than I used to train a year— it is an extraordinary feeling. Oprah got me to ask a new question, `How can I make a real difference?' I now know if you ask a great question, you get a great answer and we all win." Each week Maurer dedicates one day a week to do his job for free and "virtually" coach people who visit the five sites. The Oprah Winfrey Show is the highest rated talk show in television history. It is seen by 33 million viewers a week in the United States and is broadcast in 135 countries.
Maurer is a frequent guest on San Diego's KUSI-TV, is a nominee for 1998's Fitness Instructor of the Year" by IDEA (the association of fitness professionals) and was named by Arnold Schwarzenegger as a special consultant to the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He is the author of Maurer Power: The Leading Fitness Program That Begins in Your Mind, which will also be available in Spanish next month.
