HOLIDAY PUPPET SHOW

The Casa de Oro Branch of the San Diego County Library, located at 9628 Campo Road, Suite L in Spring Valley will host "The Mixed Up Night Before Christmas", this season's puppet play by the San Diego County Library Puppeteers. Everyone is welcome at the presentation, scheduled for Thursday, December 17th at 3:30 p.m. For more information, phone 463-3236.

 

SANTA'S WORKSHOP

Mark your calendars and join us in ringing in the holiday season. Good cheer, delicious food, live family entertainment by Sparkles the Clown, exciting crafts for kids, and a visit with "ol Santa himself will top off this spirited morning. Santa's Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, December 19, at the East Valley Community Center located at 2245 E. Valley Parkway.

There are two sessions available to choose from which begin at 8-9:30 a.m. or 10:30-12:00 p.m. Prices are $4 for each child, and $4 for each adult, and include a continental breakfast, entertainment, crafts for children and a visit with Santa. MESSIAH SING-ALONG

The La Jolla Symphony and Chorus presents its annual "Messiah-Sing" on Saturday, December 19th at 2 p.m. at the beautiful St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlsbad. At this popular event, one of the oldest of its kind in San Diego County — Choral Director David Chase leads the chorus and audience in the Christmas portions of Handel's Messiah as a community sing-along.

In addition to the 130-member La Jolla Symphony Chorus seated with the audience, guest soloists sing the Christmas arias, accompanied by the La Jolla Symphony Messiah-Sing Chamber Orchestra. The Church is located at Alga Road & El Fuerte, La Costa/Carlsbad. Tickets are $10 at the door. Please call 534-4637 for advance tickets.

 

CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE OF LIGHTS

Sail & Power Boaters are invited to enter the Mission Bay Christmas Boat Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 12. This event began in December 1971 with 7 boats and now boasts over 130 participants.

The parade will start at 7 p.m. in the channel west of Quivera Basin and follow a 5 mile route along the shoreline of Mission Bay. The Sea World Band and Shamu will also be on hand for added color. The parade will end at Sea World with the re-lighting of the Sky Tower Tree of Lights and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. The best viewing areas will be along Ski Beach on East Vacation Isle, Riviera Drive, Crown Point Drive, and the western side of Fiesta Island. AFRICAN DRUMMING AND DANCE

Miramar College's Evening with the Experts lecture series will offer "Traditional African Drumming and Dance" performed by the San Diego State University African Music Ensemble on Friday, Dec. 11 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in lecture hall I-101.

The evening's lecture and exciting accompanying performance will be directed by John Flood and Emmalyne Moreno. Flood is a faculty member in the SDSU School of Music and Dance, and also teaches part-time in the music department for Miramar College. Presentations are free. VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE

Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego's premiere Latino arts organization, is proud to announce the screening of the award-winning Mexican documentary A Long Journey To Guadalupe. The program will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17th at 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural de la Raza (Presidents Way & Park Blvd., in Balboa Park).

This documentary explores the historical, philosophical and cultural meanings of the Virgin of Guadalupe, also considered by many to be the Aztec goddess Tonantzin/Coatlicue and Mother Nature. The story is conveyed by a keenly structured narrative comprised of voices and points of view from many scholars and believers who represent both academic and popular sentiments. EASTLAKE FAMILY DAY

Enjoy an early holiday gift as the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center offers free admission to all at EastLake Family Day on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 9:30-4 p.m.This free day is presented by the EastLake Company, which is currently sponsoring the popular SPORT exhibit. In SPORT, you can pitch like a big league ballplayer, climb like a mountaneer, spin like an ice skater and balance like a gymnast.

AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS

Lamb's Players Theatre and the Hotel del Coronado present "An American Christmas," a turn-of-the-century feast and celebration. December 16-27 in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel del Coronado. This is a unique theatrical experience that surrounds guest with an authentic celebration from the turn-of-the-century.

Step back to 1908 as the Grand Ballroom of the historic Hotel del Coronado is magically transformed into a turn-of-the-century family celebration where the mood is festive and the feeling of holiday spirits soars. It will be an unforgettable three-hour evening filled with music, stories, dance, humor and wonderful characters in elegant period costumes, all woven around a five-course gourmet meal. THE MESSIAH RETURNS

The San Diego Chamber Orchestra celebrates the return of the Messiah, George Frederic Handel's triumphant masterpiece for the holiday season. Under the baton of music director Donald Barra, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra in concert with the San Diego Master Chorale will present the full oratorio at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Wednesday, Dec. 16 and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in San Diego on Friday, Dec. 18. THE NUTCRACKER

Returning for the 5th year, the Moscow Classical Ballet brings its acclaimed production The Nutcracker to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido one weekend only beginning Fri., Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Remaining performances are Sat., Dec. 19 and Sun., Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The arrival of the Moscow Classical Ballet's Nutcracker signals the return of this world-renowned company which presents Russian ballets in traditional productions. The essential focus of the ballet's story is that of a little girl growing up to be an adult set to the splendid music of Tchaikovsky. Tickets are $16-$34 and are now on sale at the Center's Ticket Office, 340 N. Escondido Blvd.

 

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR IN CONCERT

December 12 & 13, the La Jolla symphony & Chorus presents Power of the Orient, a richly varied program of music from the exotic East. Guest artist Anoushka Shankar performs her world-renowned father Ravi Shank-ar's Sitar Concerto No. 1. 17-year-old Anoushka Shankar is the only sitarist in the world to be trained completely by Ravi Shankar.

Since her performance debut at age of 13, she has toured the world with her father, playing the sitar at such varied venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, Barbican Hall in London, and Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festival in Seattle. In July she was awarded a House of Commons shield by British Parliament "In recognition of her artistry and musicianship—as preeminent musician of the Asian Arts." She is both the youngest and the sole female recipient of this honor. For ticket information, call 534-4637.
