Chula Vista Sets Public Workshop on Mid-Bayfront For Dec. 7

A public workshop with the city of Chula Vista’s Redevelopment Agency is scheduled for Dec. 7 to give community members and interested organizations an opportunity to provide input on the future development of the property known as the Mid-Bayfront.

The workshop will be held in the cafeteria of the Chula Vista High School from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The school is located at the corner of Fourth Avenue and K Street (820 Fourth Ave.), with the closest parking and access to the cafeteria on K Street.

“The city is committed to providing a forum for public input from our community in order to fully gather and understand the issues appropriate to this important project,” said City Manager David D. Rowlands, Jr. “We will work with the applicant, environmental groups, residents and other interested parties to assist in this process.”

The workshop agenda will include the property history, values and expectations, and ideas and concepts. The Mid-Bayfront is an approximate 126-acre site within the Bayfront Redevelopment Project Area, located generally north of Lagoon Drive (F Street), west of Bay Boulevard and east of the Sweetwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Several months ago, the city received an application for development of a mixed-use project consisting of 3,400 residential units, 35,000-square-feet of commercial uses and up to three hotels on the Mid-Bayfront. Both the city and the developer have agreed to defer any action until after the public workshops are completed.

Following the December workshop, another public workshop is set for Jan. 11 at Chula Vista High School. It is anticipated that a joint meeting of the City Council/Redevelopment Agency and the city’s Planning Commission will be held in February to present the workshop findings.
