California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKS) at Southwestern College has developed a program for welfare recipients interested in taking short-term training courses to develop occupational skills quickly. This program helps students move from dependency to self-sufficiency through employment.
Once CalWORKS students are enrolled in an approved self-initiated educational program they participate in the development of a Welfare-to-Work Plan which includes their educational and occupational goals. Students are required to engage in 32 hours a week of work or a combination of work, school, work experience or internships.
Designed specifically to help CalWorks clients, the new-mini certificate programs at Southwestern College include a number of technical career courses: PC Support Specialist, Certified Nurses Assistant, Biotech Lab Assistant, Telemedia Technician, Internet WEB Specialist, Microapplications Specialist, and Groundskeeper.
The program offers assistance for those CalWORKS students who have children and need childcare. For more information about the services and programs offered through CalWORKS at Southwestern College call (619) 482-6510.
