The national touring exhibition, FREE at last: A History of the Abolition of Slavery in America will open the San Diego Public Library - Central Library on Monday, Dec. 7 and continue through Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999.

The exhibition raises three interrelated questions: How was it possible that men and women of "good will" living two hundred years ago tolerated an institution universally condemned today? Why was slavery, an institution that existed in some form in all societies from earliest recorded history, condemned by the mid-nineteenth century in the United States? How did slavery dome to be a fundamental cause of the Civil War?

The exhibition will illuminate shades of opinion and ambiguities within the ranks of the famous and ordinary, free and slave, men and women, who came to see slavery as incompatible with the ideals upon which this nation was founded.
