Birth of Christ Celebrated

December 25, the traditional date when Christians, throughout the world pause to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, will soon be upon us. Around our home, like in many other traditional Mexican American homes, "El Nacimiento" is the centerpiece of our homes. "Cristo" is the focus of our celebration.

The birth of our Savior, 2000 years ago, is a time of rejoicing. Mass and Holy Communion are integral to our Christmas celebration. Mass brings to us the ability to share with others in the sacredness of life. And indeed, it is a Holy Night.

Christmas is a time when we gather with our families. Traditionally, it is at the home of the parents where children and grandchildren join together and take pleasure in the fullness of life. We rejoice in the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives and share in the joy and love that he brings us.

In communion with our American customs, we also join in the rituals of the Christmas tree, lightening up our homes, and exchanging gifts. Mexican Americans may wait until the "Feast of the Three Kings," which is on January 6th, to exchange gifts. This is to remind us of that time, long ago when three Kings from the East, bearing gifts for the newborn Christ, followed a bright evening star to Bethlehem to honor the new born King, Jesus Christ.

In these few weeks before December 25 arrives do not be caught up in "getting and spending." After all merchants have been with us for an eternity selling their goods. They are not the spirit of Christmas. God is.
