The history of women's involvement in the creation and maintenance of Chicano Park during its thirty-year history is significant. Please join the women's History Reclamation Project in welcoming community activist Irene Mena as she reveals the stories of women who have been helping to support Chicano Park since its controversial beginnings. Mena will also discuss the varied roles that women continue to assume in the government of the Park, to ensure the preservation and increase public awareness of the San Diego landmark, so that future generations may not forget the history and struggle behind its inception.
Irene Mena, a long-time resident of Logan Heights, is a founding member of the Chicano Park Steering Committee. She is also a member of the Chicano Federation and has received the title of Honorary Mother of the Brown Berets, a Chicano and minority rights organization in San Diego.
The lecture will coincide with a special celebration and Exhibit Opening at the Women's History Project's museum. The exhibit, A Peace for All celebrates the efforts of local women who have worked, in many mediums, to promote and preserve peace in our community. The exhibit will also feature the history of women in Chicano Park, through photos and archival documents, in addition to other histories of women's peace initiatives, worldwide, during the 19th and 20th centuries. The festivities will include refreshments and a gift raffle.
The lecture will last from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Women's History Reclamation Project, 2323 Broadway, Suite 107 in the Golden Hill neighborhood of downtown San Diego. The museum will remain open until 6:00 pm for those who wish to linger after the lecture to view the exhibit. WHRP Members Free. Guests $5 donation requested.
