"Holiday Entertainment"

A free holiday entertainment tradition continues with a variety of music, singing and performances taking the stage at Old Town San Diego's Bazaar del Mundo throughout the month of December. From the puppetry of Rene's Marionettes to the pleasant chimes of the United Methodist Church Bell Choir, visitors of all ages will find something to delight and entertain them. All acts are free. Performances will be Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 11-12, Dec. 18-19, with a special performance on Friday, Dec. 24. The Bazaar del Mundo is located at 2754 Calhoun St., in the heart of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. For more information, call 296-3161.

 

"A Christmas Carol"

One of San Diego's most beloved holiday traditions returns to San Diego Repertory Theatre once again. Young and old will be magically transported back to Old London as Charles Dickens and his cast of characters take audiences on a spirited holiday journey in the highly-acclaimed "A Christmas Carol," running through Dec. 24. "Holiday in The Park"

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park's annual Holiday in The Park event is coming Dec. 10th and 11th, 6-9 PM. The park will be decorated for the holidays in 1800s style, and park shops host free refreshments and children's activities. The event focuses on the holiday season of the 1800s and includes music, entertainment, craft and skill demonstrations, family photo opportunities, Military, Californio, Native American and Mormon Battalion encampments, children's pony rides, family wagon rides and candlelight tours. Sister Carol in Concert

Sister Carol is "The Black Cinderella" of Reggae. She has toured all over the world and has earned her great recognition in the world of Reggae, and has been honored for her musical excellence with a Grammy nomination. Her new release "Isis" is a tribute to the Women of the World. She will appear Dec. 11 from 8 PM - 11 PM at the WorldBeat Center located at 2100 Park Blvd., San Diego. Holiday Spirit

Catch the Holiday Spirit will be presented by San Diego Choraleers and Serra-Naders adult choruses, as well as the Inflections vocal jazz group, Women of Note, and Radar and the Blips, under the auspices of the San Diego Community College District, on Sat. Dec. 11 at 7:30 PM at Patrick Henry High School Auditorium, located at 6702 Wandemere Drive, San Carlos. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under, children under 2 are free. Marlboro Noches

The Marlboro Noches de Baile National Tejano Dance Finals, a grassroots Latin dance competition for amateur dancers, will land in San Diego, for the final round of competition at Lydia's Café and Nightclub on Saturday, Dec. 11. Three couples - Jesse Salomon and Cinthia Soto from El Paso, Texas; Andres Gonzalez and Mayra Rojas, from Tucson, Ariz.; and Luis Lazoya and Magda-lena Martinez, from Las Vegas, Nev.- will represent their respective regions as they compete for the $10,000 first place prize. Following the competition, popular recording stars Los Cadetes de Linares will take the stage for a special concert performance. Tickets are $16 each and will be available at the door. Mexican Pageant

Las Posadas, is a beautiful Mexican tradition that will be led by two children dressed as Mary and Joseph in a procession of friends and neighbors. This pageant signifies the search for posada, or shelter by Mary and Joseph and is considered the beginning of the Christmas Holidays. On air personalities Gaby Casas from Radio Latina will be hosting Las Posadas, Dec. 11th from 4-8 PM in the Primo Salon parking lot at the Southbay Market Place, located in front of Wal-Mart at 45 NE Broadway in Chula Vista, right off the 54 freeway. The celebration will include a live nativity scene, mariachi music, Christmas carols and a performance by children of Ballet Folklorico. The event is free.

 

Holiday Concerts

Concerts especially designed for the holiday season are presented in two venues on Dec. 11 and 12 by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. The choral concert, Sing Noel, is Saturday at 8 p.m. and repeats Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Howard Brubeck Theatre on the college's San Marcos campus. The orchestral concert, Holiday Favorites, is in the Center Theater at California Center for the Arts, Escondido, on Sunday at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for students and children, $8 for seniors citizens, and $10 for general audience.

 

"La Pastorela de los Pobres"

San Diegans can watch a new twist on the age-old tale of good vs. evil in this year's "La Pastorela de los Pobres," Teatro Mascara Magica's ninth annual Mexican-inspired Christmas production. Playwright Max Branscomb has always been able to weave topical events into the traditional story of "La Pastorela" the shepherds' journey to Bethlehem to witness the first Christmas. But this year's production transports the ancient story into the present. The production runs from Dec. 10-12 and Dec. 16-23 at the Lyceum, 79 Horton Plaza, San Diego. Traditions of Christmas

The seventh annual Traditions of Christmas - A Musical Spectacular, will move to downtown San Diego, with eight performances from Dec. 13-22 at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street in San Diego. This is a colorful, holiday family entertainment event. Using a wide variety of music, dance, drama and color to bring all your favorite Christmas traditions to life on stage, a cast of over 100 volunteer performers from San Diego communities presents a production range from 20 high-stepping, Rockette-style precision kick-line dancers to child-sized Christmas elves singing and dancing in Santa's workshop. The show concludes with an inspiring live Nativity pageant, complete with live donkey, sheep and majestic camel. Tickets are available by calling 588-0206.

 

Winter Recital at Cesar Chavez Elementary School Auditorium

Students of the Community Music Center, will present a winter recital on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School Auditorium, 1404 S. 40th St. in Southeast San Diego. There will be performances on all levels, with group demonstrations and "star" students performing solos or duets. The Center maintains an enrollment of an average of 85 full scholarship students in music classes.

Students enrolled are fourth through sixth graders from eight neighborhood elementary schools. Five bilingual professional musicians from the San Diego community teach violin, piano, winds, trumpet and guitar. Students learn the basic elements of musicianship and develop an appreciation for the art. An exceptional feature of the program is the students who conscientiously take lessons for two years their musical instruments as a gift in a graduation ceremony. With two years of study and instrument in hand, students go on to become "star players" in middle school bands and orchestras. "Fiesta Navidad"

This Southland's most popular Latin-flavored holiday show, returns to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido for one night only appearance on Dec. 15 at 8:00 p.m. A festival of music and dance for the entire family, Fiesta Navidad brings the pageantry and excitement of Mexican Christmas traditions to life on stage. The show stars Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano and dancers of Ballet Folklorico Ollin. Tickets are prices from $18 to $35 and may be purchased by calling 1-800-988-4253.

 

Last Party of The Millennium

"Reflections"

Hormonally Correct, a San Diego Production Company, will present a special evening of two one-act plays about women. The evening is titled "Reflections" and includes unique productions of two important and well-known plays, "The Stronger," and "The Art of Remembering." The show will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sherwood Auditorium on Dec. 16th and 17th at 8:00 PM and Dec. 19th at 7:00 PM. Sherwood Auditorium is located at 700 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Tickets are $10.00 each and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 220-TIXS.

 

MiraCosta Chorale Groups to Perform

This season, MiraCosta College offers two holiday choral concerts —"Christmas at the Mission" presented Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at the San Luis Rey Mission, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside. Admission is set at $7; students and seniors $5. And "Christmas by Candle-light" is slated for Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the MiraCosta College Student Center, One Barnard Drive, Oceanside.
