By 2005 Hispanics will become the largest minority, as well as the youngest segment of the U.S. population. Now more than ever, access to higher education for Hispanic youth is critical. In response to this growing need, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), a non-profit educational organization, continues to provide opportunities to Hispanic youth through CHCI's leadership development programs and the Scholarship Connection Service.
"A key priority for CHCI will be to expand its efforts to serve Latino communities outside of the Washington D.C. area. In doing so, we hope to increase the geographic diversity of our applicants and promote the effectiveness of the CHCI Scholarship Connection as a means of obtaining financial assistance for higher education," said CHCI Executive Director Ingrid Duran.
The CHCI Scholarship Connection is a program designed to help Hispanic students access scholarships and other resources of financial assistance free of charge. This service was established by CHCI in response to the increasing numbers of college-bound Hispanic students in need of financial assistance.
The CHCI leadership development programs —the Summer Internship and Fellowship— bring Latinos students from across the country to Washington, D.C. for hands-on work in the public policy arena. Programs participants are provided with a stipend, round-trip transportation, health benefits and/or housing. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2000-2001 openings.
"We want to empower Hispanic youth with the tools necessary to compete successfully in today's competitive environment. But it will take the effort of our entire community — family, friends, educators, and the business sector— to encourage our young leaders and to help them to realize their dreams," said Ms. Duran.
