Hall of Famer Rod Carew to join Bone Marrow and Blood Drive

Saturday, December 11 from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in Encanto, 6785 Imperial Drive, American Red Cross and a local grandmother will seeking a bone marrow match for her grandson Luther "Woody" Ellett. Hall of Famer, Rod Carew, will attend the drive from about 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

The Red Cross is asking for blood donors, particularly minority blood donors, to commit this winter holiday to give the gift of life and make it a tradition for years to come. Types O and B blood are often in high demand.

To donate blood, you must be 17 or older, be in good health and weight at least 110 pounds.

 

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park Concession Pre-Meeting Forum

As part of their long term effort to incorporate public input and maintain the General Plan for Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, the San Diego Coast District Park and Recreation staff will host a Concession Pre-meeting Forum. The Forum will be conducted specifically for the Bazaar del Mundo, El Centro Artesano, Theatre in Old Town, Alvarado Provisions, Captain Fitch's Mercantile, Toler's Leather, San Diego House, Johnson House, Old Town General Store, Bailey and McGuire Pottery, and Dobson's Corner. The Forum will be in the Cabrillo Room on December 14, 1999, at the Ramada Limited Old Town Meeting Room in rear of 3878 Old Town Avenue Casey Family Building at 6 p.m.

The purpose of the Concession Pre-meeting is to solicit input from the public and/or interested parties regarding possible uses for a concession facility, facility improvements and/or services, which will benefit the park, community and the visiting public. The concession Pre-meeting will not include a discussion on terms and conditions of upcoming concession projects or contracts.

 

Grand Jury Candidates Needed

Individuals are needed for the 2000-2001 Grand Jury to review citizen complaints and carry out the Grand Jury's traditional investigative role.

Applications may be obtained from the court website, by telephone at 685-6667, or in person from Superior Court business offices in the downtown Hall of Justice and in the East, North, and South County Regional Centers. The website address is: www.sandiego.courts.ca.gov/superior/grandjury/html.

Applications must be received by the Jury Commissioner by Friday, January 14 to qualify for the applicant pool. Individuals must have lived in the county at least since June 1, 1999 and be able to serve four or five days per week during the fisical year from July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001.

Annual Christmas Tree Sale Benefits SWC Baseball Team

It's that time of the year. The Southwestern College team sponsors the annual Christmas Tree sale that includes top-quality Douglas Firs, Noble Firs and Grand Firs shipped directly from Oregon.

This yearly tradition supports the team's efforts to raise money for the Apache baseball season. The tree sale is taking place now and will run through Tuesday, December 21. Visit the tree lot Monday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the corner of Otay Lakes Road on East H Street in Chula Vista.

All tree prices are competitive and include free delivery if needed. Proceeds from the sale of the trees benefit the SWC baseball team.

Las Posadas

A traditional Mexican Christmas Celebration Comes to the SouthBay

On air personalities Gaby Casas from Radio Latina will be hosting Las Posadas, a traditional Mexican celebration that signifies the beginning of the Christmas holidays. The event will be held December 11th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Primo Salon parking lot at the Southbay Market Place, located in front of Wal-Mart at 45 NE Broadway in Chula Vista, right off the 54 freeway.

The celebration will include a live nativity scene, mariachi music, Christmas carols and a performance by children of Ballet Folklorico. Holiday refreshments will be served in a heated seating area that will include hot chocolate, cookies and traditional Mexican fare. In the McDonald's Kids Zone, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to visit with children, other activities to keep them entertained include: face painting, balloons and an Astro Jump.
