If you think you know all about the Parade of Lights on San Diego Bay, you have not heard all the news! The Port of San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will host its 28th Annual Boat parade on the bay on Sunday, December 5th and again on Sunday December 12th from 5:30 - 9:00 P.M. The theme of this year's event is "In The Spirit of America".
The Port of San Diego, as a major contributing sponsor, has become our title sponsor. The event has also grown from simply two nights of parades with festively decorated boats to include a fund-raising party, a day time boat parade preceding the first night parade (which we are calling our Flag Parade), and additionally, over the weekend of the first parade, December 4th and 5th, a free public festival at the Broadway Pier featuring US Navy and Marine Corps. There will be displays, exhibits, demonstrations and ship tours of the frigate USS Jarette, the USS Essex and a Coast Guard Cutter. The day will include entertainment, great food and fun for the family. Festival hours are 10 AM to 4 PM.
The theme of the 1999 Port of San Diego Bay Parade Of Lights is "In the Spirit of America". Trophies will be awarded to boats by size and power/sail categories, judged on the basis of incorporation of this year's theme, overall design in lights and/or flags and demonstration of spirit.
In conjunction with the parade, a gala fund-raiser will be held at the Cruise Ship Terminal on Sunday, December 5th from 4 PM to 9 PM. Tickets are $50 for adults, $10 for children. The event will feature a buffet, entertainment and the opportunity to view the parade from the decks of a US Navy ship. Proceeds benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. For more information call (619) 296-3562.
The route of the parades begins off Shelter Island, progresses past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and the Convention Center. It then crosses over to Coronado and past the Coronado Island Marriot Hotel, Coronado Ferry Landing Marketplace and ending at the Navy carrier turning basin.
Ideal viewing locations are Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero and Seaport Village. Spectator cruises to view the parades from the water are available at H&M Landing, Point Loma Sportfishing, Fisherman's Landing, San Diego Harbor Excursions and Hornblower Cruises.
