Calendar of Events

International Dance Festival `98

The Balboa Park Performing Folk Dancers are presenting their 6th Annual International Dance Festival on Saturday, August 15 at 2 pm., and Sunday, August 16 at 2 pm at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park. Festival `98 is a delightful two-hour program of dances from around the world. Admission is free.

This year the Festival will feature the following dances and dance groups:

Suites of Hawaiian/Polynesian dances.

The Ixquintla Ballet Folkloric will present a suite of traditional Mexican dances.

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society will be performing a suite of traditional Scottish Highland and country dances.

The Balboa Park Performing Folk Dancers will present dance suites from Lithuanian, and Poland, and selected American vintage dances.

 

"Best of Pirates & Pinafore" to play on tall ship

On The Waterfront - A recipe for success: The immortal music of Gilber and Sullivan, the theatrical genius of the Comic Opera, and the unique setting of Star of India. The three combine efforst once again this summer to bring San Diegans a Return to the High Seas with "Best of Pirates & Pinafore."

San Diego Comic Opera and the Maritime Museum will team up to present 16 performances aboard Star of India, Thursdays through Saturdays, August 13-14, 20-22, and 27-29, 6 and 8 pm shows. Tickets are $20. For ticket information call 234-9153.

 

Miramar Air Show

The Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar Air Show makes its first flight as a Marine air show August 14-16, 1998. The Miramar Air Show is now the largest military air show in the world, featuring the best military and civilian pilots on the planet. An Invitation Only Show will be held Friday, August 14. Public daytime shows will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, and a public Twilight Air Show will be held August 15, after the daytime show.

Admission, parking and blanket seating for all performances are free.

 

Seniors Hawaiin Day Dance

The Senior Services of the San Diego Park and Recreation Department will sponsor a Senior Dance to celebrate Hawaiian Day Dance at the Balboa Park Club (near the House of Pacific Relations) on Thursday, August 13, 1998 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 pm. Refreshments will be served. Special awards will be presented for the best Hawaiian Costume.

"Moonlight Serenade" a popular 16 pcs orchestra will provide the live music. A donation of $1.50 will be accepted at the door.

 

San Diego Art Institute Presents Dan Adams

The San Diego Art Institute presents "Life, Death and In-between' the emotional roller coaster life of Dan Adams. An Artist Reception will be held Friday, August 21, 6-8pm. The Art Institute is located at 1439 El Prado, House of Charm, Balboa Park.

 

Poemas por Maura Harvey

Maura Harvey tiene doctorado en Literatura Hispanoamericana de la Universidad de California, Irvine y maestría de Harvard University donde estudió con Jorge Luis Borges. Marua escribe primero en español, aunque el español es su segundo idioma. Escribe poesía desde los diez años.

Comic Artists To Work Together

Members of the not-for-profit organization Professional Amigos of Comic Art Society (PACAS), will be participating in the upcoming Comic-Con International Convention & Exhibit in San Diego August 13-16, 1998.

This marks the first time PACAS members from Southern California, Texas, and Mexico will join together to reach new audiences as well as expand their presence into the cartoon and comic art industry.

Eighth Annual Latin American Festival

The Association Latino Americana will be hosting it's eighth annual Latin American Festival, on August 15, 1998. Comencing at 4:30 pm at the Organ Pavillion in Balboa Park, the festival will celebrate Latin American heritage and folklore.

The "House of Latin America" was founded by Dr. Carlos Moran who wanted to unite Latin American residents in order to preserve their cultural heritage and keep alive the Castillian Languaje (Spanish); in 1990 Maria Sosa transformed this group into Association Latino Americana, Inc. It's members are Latin American families representing their original country and residing in the United States for many years.

There will be free refreshments and free admission.

 

MiraCosta to Host `La Guelaguetza,' Oaxacan Cultural Festival

MiraCosta College will present the fourth anual "La Guelaguetza," an oaxacan cultural festival, Aug 16, 11 am.-4 pm., on the central lawn at the college's Oceanside at One Barnard Drive.

A harvest festival well known in southern Mexico, the Guelaguetza has become a popular celebration in the United States in the last decade. In Mexico, the Guelaguetza survived several hundred years of censorship from missionaries who attempted to destroy what they considred pagan rites celebrating the Gods of corn, rain and fertility.

"La Guelaguetza" is sponsored by the Third World Consortium of MiraCosta. Admission: $4 donation for adults; children under 12 free. Proceeds benefit cultural and education programs for the Oaxacan community.

 

Free Summer `Pops' Concert on Chula Vista's Bayfront

"From Broadway to Hollywood' will be the theme of a free "Summer Pops" concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 at Chula Vista's Marina View Park. The program will include selections from movies and Brodaway musicals and conclude with a fireworks fnale set to the music of "Star Wars."

Free shuttle buses will leave from the parking lot a H Street Trolley Station from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and return to the station following the concert.
