'98 Election Roundup

Candidate Phil Angelides (D) is promising that "if elected for State Treasurer he will form the first-ever Latino Investment Advisory Council that will help identify investment opportunities in the Latino economic sector." Angelides made the promise to the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce at their Oakland conference.

 

The San Diego County Democratic Party's Central Committee has elected Art Castanares as its next chairman and Steve Rivera as its new Vice Chair. The other officers elected include: Tereasurer, Ed Lehman. Secretary; Harmony Lee. Political Action; Gloria Johnson. Administration; Joan Schneider.

 

California Republicans unveiled a new web site as a means to introduce Republican candidates to voters that have computers and access to the WWW net. The site may be reached at www.victory 98.org.

 

 

Albert "Al" Alvarado, (D) has announced his candidacy for the National City Council. Campaign kick-off will be on August 30.

 

Juan Vargas,(D) San Diego City Councilman has had his re-election to the City Council in '98 Primary election contested in court. "The problem is term limits," stated Elizabeth Myers. "Vargas served more than half of the four-year term that was created when Congressman Bob Filner got elected to Congress...That is defined as a full term under the City Charter. When he completes his current term he will have served two full terms he is therefore ineligible to re-assume office in December," stated Thomas S. Tanana, Esq who filed the lawsuit.

 

Attorney General Dan Lungren (R) will hold a business rountable with the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce and the local chapter of the Latino Business Association August 28, 1998.

 

Anthony Rodriquez has announced his candidacy for the San Ysidro Elementary School Board.

 

Senator Hilda Solis(D) is urging Latino Voters to not support PROP 5, The Indian Gambling Initiative.She indicates that she is supporting Senate Pro.-Tem John Burton's Senate bill which will ratify 10 Indian gambling compacts between Indian gaming tribes and the State of California.

 

Senator Barbara Boxer (D), by all accounts, did a number on Candidate Matt Fong (R). It seemed like a replay of the first Davis/Lundgren debate except that in this case Fong was the one lacking the fire in his belly!
