Playhouse
Michael Greif, La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director, directs the world premiere of Jessica Hagedorn's new play DOGEATERS, which opens at the Playhouse on Sunday September 13. Previews begin on Tuesday, September 8 and the show runs through October 11. DOGEATERS is the first show Greif has directed at the Playhouse since last season's musical smash RENT.
DOGEATERS also marks the first Playhouse-commissioned new work since Grief became Artistic Director in 1995. It is adapted for the stage by Filipina American novelist and poet Jessica Hagedorn from her best-selling novel of the same name.
DOGEATERS is the final production of the Playhouse's 1998 six-play subscription season. The cast of 14 includes Alec Mapa, who played the title role in Broadway's Tony-Award winning production of M. Butterfly, Sandra Oh, the Cable Ace Award-winning actress from HBO's "Arliss," and Ching Valdes-Aran, winner of the 1997 Obie Award for her work in Flipzoids at Mavi Theatre.
DOGEATERS is an epic portrayal of the Philippines, as seen through the eyes of Rio Gonzaga (Sandra Oh), both as a 13-year old girl in 1959 and as an adult in the 1980's living through the world-changing events of the Marcos regime.
