Volunteers Needed

Libre! Services for Women and Children

Libre! Service for Women and Children is seeking volunteers to be trained and educated on the dynamics of domestic abuse. Upon certification volunteers will work with clients and staff in the Libre! program. Volunteer opportunities include answering the 24-hour domestic violence hotline, working with the children in the program, and providing community outreach.

The 40 hour training program takes place at the Community Resource Center, 650 Second Street, Encinitas, CA 92024. Phone (760) 753-1156. Carmen Maldonado is the Volunteer Education Coordinator.

Become a Docent at the Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, is looking for volunteers to join their docent group.

New training classes being in October with an evening art history class which runs for seven weeks, then volunteers will learn the fundamentals of interacting with different age groups, how to engage audience, and public speaking skills. The museum is looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers.

National City Business Conference

"Shipping and Rail Transportation for Future Growth," is the theme of the conference presented by Bruce M. Flohor, Chairman/CEO of RailTex. With the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century and the possibility of a new "Jobs Train" along the border, Mr Flohor's talk will be very topical.

The conference will be held September 9th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in National City at 32nd Street and Tidelands Avenue. Reservations can be made through the National City Chamber of Commerce, Ph. 477-9339. Cost is $20, including lunch.


NCLA 1998 Latinas of the Year Nominations

Nominations for the North County Latinas of the Year are now being accepted. Nominees must be women of Latino heritage who have excelled in their category of nomination. Categories include: Arts & Culture, Family & Community, Health, science & the Environment, Leadership, Youth empowerment and business or entrepreneurship. Nominees must reside, volunteer or work in North San Diego County.

Call NCLA at (760) 431-3812 to request a nomination form All nominations must be returned by September 12. The honorees will be recognized at a gala dinner and dance to be held on Saturday, October 24.


Carlsbad Arts Office Offers Grants to Arts Groups

The Carlsbad Arts Office is seeking applicants for its thirteenth annual Community Grant Program. The Grant fund has $13,500 available to not-for-profit organizations and to visual, literary and performing artists for projects taking place in Carlsbad in 1999. Schools and school-related organizations may apply under the Arts Education category which has $4,500 available for school-based proposals. A Grant Application workshop will be held on Monday, September 14 at 3 p.m. at the Carlsbad Arts Office. The deadline for submission of grant applications is Monday, October 19, 1998.

"Rusenews" now "Teatro Sur News"

El Campo Ruse has once again risen as the phoenix of community based culture and arts programming as TEATRO SUR.

TEATRO SUR will be utilizing the new "Seventh & J" Downtown venue in collaboration with Stylus Magazine. This partnership begins with a new series "Jazz in the East Village" featuring Gilbert Castellanos with his B3 Hammond Quartet and guests - Wednesday nights from 10pm till 2am with a $5. cover.

TEATRO SUR will continue the work of the "RUSE" in producing community workshops throughout the city-scape. New web projects are being solicited and a continued tracking of the Border Art Workshop's newly developed Centro Comunitario de las Aguascalientes in Maclovio Rojas.
