46TH Anniversary World Tour of Amalia Hernandez's Ballet Folklorico De Mexico

U.S. Premiere: "Dance Of Quetzales"

The Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez, returned to the United States in the Fall of 1998 to celebrate tis 46th Anniversary. This spectacular company of 65 dancers and musicians direct from the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City is one of the most prestigious dancer companies in the world. The company will bring its "kaleidoscopic pageantry" to 16 cities including Los Angeles, San Diego (Sept. 22-23, 1998), Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, and Miami in September and October.

Ballet Folklorico de Mexico is a celebration of life in movement, music, and color. Its many dances encompass Mayan and Aztec rituals, dramatic events from Mexico's past and colorful depictions of Mexico's diverse culture and folklore.

Drawing from the rich and varied repertoire of Amalia Hernandez, Latin America's most important choreographer, the selection of dances for the company's 46th anniversary will include one U.S. Premiere, Dance of Quetzales. This ancient dance has its origin in the legend of the Quetzal, mythological bird of Mesoamerica considered by the Indians as sacred and symbolizing for them the essence of beauty and elegance.

In its home state of Puebla, the dance is executed by performers trained during many months to personify the bird and illustrate the dignity, godliness and grace the Indians attribute to this divine representation. The plumed crowns worn by the dancers are approximately six feet in diameter and demand from the dancers much practice and great skill to create the power and beauty of this choreography.

American Honda Motor Corp., Inc., is celebrating its tenth anniversary as the Founding National Sponsor and Title Sponsor of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico's U.S. tour. This year TEL-MEX/Sprint Communications, L.L.C. Bank of America returns as a major regional sponsor in California, Arizona, and New Mexico and Target TREAT-SEATS is a first time co-national sponsor of this 1998 tour.

This year also marks the eleventh consecutive year that Friedson Enterprises and Julio Solorzano-Foppa are producing the U.S. tour. They have recently been named world-wide tour producers of the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.
