"Chess"

An international chess competition, the cold war, and pop music combine in a strong, emotionally complex mixture in the rock musical "Chess," which will be presented at the Moonlight Amphitheatre on September 8 through 19. "Chess" was initially a record album that was released in the early 1980's and generated the hit singles "One Night in Bang-kok" and "I Know Him So Well."

The plot of "Chess" involves a young Hungarian girl, Florence Vassy, who loses her father during the Budapest uprising of 1956. Introduced to the game by her father, the grown-up Florence has become an American and is now the "Second" to American chess champion Freddie Trumper, a vulgarly arrogant superstar who is also Florence's lover. Ticket prices range from $12 to $26 for adults. The Amphitheatre is located at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive in Vista. For more information, call (760) 724-2110.

Admission to most events is free. When there is an admission charge, it is usually $10 or less. Tickets for paid performances may be obtained by calling the Performing Arts Box Office, 594-6884.

The Chicken Mole Trial

Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park will host September 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 & 11, the San Diego's premiere of "The Chicken Mole Trial." The main characters are two comadres that have known each other since they were young "homegirls" in the barrio. However, one comadre is suing the other for punitive damages that resulted from a chicken mole laced with a laxative, which was served at her wedding reception. The end is bound to surprise everyone including two of the most inept lawyers to ever appear in court. This may not be suitable for young children, (some adult language). Tickets are $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors, students and military. For more information, call the Box Office at 685-7921.
