San Diego Unified Scores Do Not Add Up: Achievement
Gap Not Closing
By Yvette tenBerge
Board members, administrators, teachers and parents throughout
San Diego County held their breath on Wednesday, August 15 waiting
for the California Department of Education to release the 2001
Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program results. For
those with children or students in the San Diego Unified School
District, the wait was even more unbearable, though, as they waited
to see if the promises made by the school board majority, Superintendent
Alan Bersin and Chancellor of Instruction, Anthony Alvarado, would
hold any water.
Courthouse's "Good-Will Ambassador"
Says Goodbye After 25 Years
By Yvette tenBerge
The audience of judges, lawyers and courthouse employees becomes
hushed as Superior Court Judge Wayne L. Peterson approaches the
bench. Although most of those in the crowd usually come to court
to witness its "trials and tribulations," on Friday,
August 17 they gathered to honor 80 year-old Ramiro "Rayme"
M. Medina, the recently retired notary public and "unofficial
court ambassador" who donated 25 years of volunteer assistance
to visitors to the 220 West Broadway building.
A Soldier's Story: Hispanic Marine Corps Col.
Embraces the Code, Makes History
By Raoul Dennis
When Angela Salinas walked into her neighborhood post office
in 1974, a 20 year old Hispanic woman, it's not likely that she
ever imagined signing up to become a marine. It wasn't in the
plan.
Relato de un marine: Coronel Hispana del Cuerpo

Cuando Angela Salinas entró a la oficina de correos
de su vecindario en 1974 (era entonces una joven hispana de 20

en el Cuerpo de Marines. No estaba en sus planes.

Cox Communications San Diego and Cablemás
Complete First-Ever Fiber Optic
Link Between U.S. and Mexico
Nine years ago, Cox Communications and Cablemás,
the second-largest cable company in Mexico, recognized the demand
for high-quality video and data reception for every cable customer
in San Diego and Tijuana. Explosive growth in the maquiladora
industry following the NAFTA agreement fueled demand for fast,
dependable data transmission. By 1992, fiber optic technology
made it possible to transport high quality signals over long distances.
Vision married technology and demand, and the result was the U.S.-Mexico
Interconnect Project, the first-ever fiber optic connection between
the United States and Mexico.

El Deber de Los Padres en un Nuevo Año
Escolar

By Congressman Bob Filner
In 1996, the welfare reform bill was signed into law. Federal

Blueprint. Institute. Sounds so nice, so progressive, so innovative
and so out of the box. WRONG! They are only new names for same
old same old. The graduates of San Diego City Schools go on to
college, a large portion of which are 4 year colleges and universities,
others to junior colleges and then 4 year colleges. Still others
go to tech schools. They graduate from these institutions of higher
learning because they receive a good education in our schools,
based on a rounded curriculum that creates a citizen that can
cope in today's modern, complicated society. Check out the SAT
scores, not just the SAT9 scores.

Mexico's Oceguera to Play for WUSA Championship
by John Philip Wyllie
When the Bay Area Cyber-Rays and the Atlanta Beat square off
on Saturday (11:00 a.m. PDT on TNT) in the first ever WUSA Founders
Cup Championship game, Mexican national team defender Gina Oceguera
will likely start on the back line for the Cyber-Rays. Oceguera's
presence on the field for the season's ultimate game seemed a
highly unlikely possibility little more than a month ago, but
a lot has changed since then.
