Vaszuez, Nevarez Take One-Two in Juried Exhbit

From over 625 works submitted by 160 artists, Perry Lee Vasquez', along with Randy Evans, "Plan Nine from Aztlán,"  a multi-media piece complete with sound was selected for this year's first-place award in the Athenaeum's 7th Annual Juried Exhibition.

Second prize went to Angel Nevarez, for his three silver gelatin prints (photographs), which were untitled.

Vasquez, who as self-taught painter has exhibited his work at The Centro Cultural de la Raza, Annex Gallery, UCSD, Euphoria Café, San Diego, and throughout the state. Vasquez describes his art as a function soul-preserving connection between himself and a world that simultaneously tormented and sustained him.

Angel Nevarez was born in Mexico City and has been working in San Diego for the last six years. Angel has been involved in a number of group shows in and around San Diego. He has learned the art of photography informally. Currently, Angel Nevarez is working on completing his B.S. degree from UCSD.

The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library's Juried Exhibition is one of San Diego's more critically acclaimed visual art events. The Exhibition takes place from August 1 through September 5, 1998. In a relatively brief time, the Library's juried exhibition has become one of the most prestigious and sought-after in the area, open to artists who live, work, or exhibit in Southern California.

The varied works encompassed a wide variety of media, including painting, photograph, mixed media, collage, fiber, foodstuff and household items. The exhibition will be on display in the Athenaeum gallery, and throughout the library, during library hours. The Athenaeum is located at 1008 Wall Street in downtown La Jolla.
