"Cine Mexicano"
The Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego County's premiere Latino arts organizations, is proud to announce the First Annual Cine Mexicano: Mexican Film Series. The series will take place August - October at CinemaStar Theaters at 320 3rd Ave. in the heart of downtown Chula Vista.
The Mexican Film Series will screen a total of six Mexican feature films. Prices to attend Cine Mexicano will be $3 for students and $5 for general audiences. "EastLake Summer Sounds"
San Diego County residents can enjoy a free pre-sunset concert in the part Sunday, August 29 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., as Jaime Valle and Equinox continues EastLake Summer Sounds `99.
Concert-goes are invited to bring blankets and beach chairs for this open-seating performance. Drinks and snacks will be available, with proceeds benefiting EastLake schools. The Latin rhythm of Jaime Valle's guitar will complement the spicy jazz of Equinox to create an incredible concert experience for all ages. For more information, call 421-3111.
"Domingo O. Ulloa"
The Centro Cultural de la Raza is honored to present the work, of a man who spent his life depicting the struggles, joys, alienation and dignity of working class people. In 1993 a California State Assembly resolution declared Domingo O. Ulloa, the "Father of Chicano Art." While Chicana/o Art is known to have many fathers and mothers, it is significant that the first solo exhibition features the work of this deeply loved and admired people's artist. "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"
The musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" is the final show of the summer season at the historic outdoor amphitheater, running Thursday through Sunday from August 19 through September 4. A story of courtship and romance set in the pioneer days of the Great Northwest. A humorous mix of cornball romance, old-fashioned ideas about the roles of men and women, and lots of acrobatic dancing, this show is pure and simple fun. Ticket prices range from $15-$25 and may be purchased by calling 588-0206.
Summer `Pops' Concert
"Tribute" will be the theme of a free "Summer Pops" concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on August 22 at Chula Vista's Marina View Park. The program will include tributes to Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra; a salute to the Big Bands; "Blessing Dance" and "Out of Africa" with the Tey'e Sa Thiosanne African Drum and Dance
Ensemble; and a fireworks grand finale set to the music of "Stars and Stripes Forever."
Presented by the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the band shell will be set up in the park close to Chula Vista Yacht Harbor. No formal seating is provided and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. This event is free and open to the public. "Anything Goes"
One of the funniest and most tuneful musical comedies of the 1930's, will open at the Moonlight Amphitheatre on August 18 through 29. "Anything Goes" is a milestone in the history of the American musical comedy in that it not only established Cole Porter as the nation's No. 1 writer of songs of fashion and sophistication, it also made a star of Ethel Merman, who played Reno Sweeney in the original 1934 production.
