Sweetwater Summit explores School-to-Career programs offers Spanish workshops

Parents, students and community members will learn how seventh-through-12th-grade and adult students are developing valuable job skills, learning relevant "real-world" knowledge, and charting lifelong career goals when they attend this year's Sweetwater Union High School district Education Summit.

"Making the Con-nection...School-to-Career" is the theme of the free event, set for August 28. Over 20 workshops will cover how Sweetwater schools in Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, national City and south San Diego/San Ysidro are helping students prepare for challenging professions in the 21st-century workplace.

Spanish-language interpreters will be available for all sessions and four will be conducted in Spanish. They include "Preparing Students for Success," which will explain how Sweetwater schools help students as early as seventy grade begin planning for life beyond high school.

"Trade Schools and Tuition Opportunities" will feature representatives from private trade schools who will describe their vocational training programs.

"A Parent's Guide to Making the Most of School and Community Resources" will teach Spanish-speaking parents how to use the school system and its services to prepare students for success in middle, junior high and high school, in college, and in the workplace. Presenters will also explain how to take advantage of free resources to help students secure job training and employment.

Another Spanish-language session will be "Paid Internships for College-bound Latinos." Parents and students will learn how free assistance from Inroads/San Diego, Inc. helps minority students earn money and valuable work experience while in college.

Other sessions will include "Adult Education Information Fair," "Earning College Credit While in High School," "Regional Occupation Program and high-Demand Jobs," "school-to-Career and the Special-education Student," and "What Every Middle-School and Junior-High Parent Should Know."

School-to-Career is one of the Sweetwater district's three top focus areas to improve student achievement and administrators say that School-to-Career is as important for those who need to work immediately after high school graduation as it is for college-bound students.

The Summit will be held

5 - 9 p.m., Friday, August 28, at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista. Free transportation is available. The event is free but advance registration is required. Call 691-5500
