The San Diego Padres are having a dream season and the town is excited about the prospects of a World Series coming to San Diego. But, wait one minute, there is another San Diego professional team having a dream season of its own.
The first-year Flash is leading the Pacific Division and is leading the Pacific Division and is leading the Pacific Division and is second behind Nashville (4-2 winners last night over Cincinnati) in the race for the regular season title in the Western Conference with 42 points.
In fact, the 42 points in 20 games is the third best in all of professional soccer including Major League Soccer (the MLS has the same point formula). The A-League Rochester Rhinos are first with 52 points and second is the MLS's Los Angeles Galaxy with 45 points. The Flash (14-6, 42) have a magic number of two to clinch a playoff berth and four to win the Pacific Division title over second-place Seattle and Orange County.
The "Lightning Bowl' a.k.a. Devore Stadium will be busy this weekend hosting two games. Two Western Conference foes, New Orleans and San Francisco Bay, travel to San Diego for important matches. The Flash are 8-3 and winners of seven of its last eight matches in the cozy confines of Devore Stadium.
The New Orleans Storm (12-9, 34) enter Friday's game trying to hold on the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference. San Diego has won three consecutive Central Division matches and it will be the first-ever match-up between the Storm and Flash. Friday is Copy Post Team Poster Night and Calif. Youth Soccer Assoc. Night.
Meanwhile, San Francisco Bay (9-12, 27) is ninth and five points behind Vancouver (12-10, 32) for eighth and final Western Conference post-season position. Sunday's match begins at 4 p.m.
