`Twighlight in the Park' Performance

City Ballet, under the direction of Steven Wistrich, announces its 6th Annual FREE public performance one Friday, August 21, 1998 at 6:15 p.m. at the Speckels Organ Pavillion in Balboa Park in San Diego sponsored by Bank of America and X-BACH Classical Radio.

The performance includes Resident choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich's staging of the Ivanov classic Swan Lake, Act II with music by Tchaikovsky and additional works by Mrs. Wistrich. This performance marks the end of City Ballet's 3-week summer intensive program for over 30 adavanced dancers throughout the country. For more information call (619) 274-6058.

Malashock Company Presents the 1998 "Summer in San Diego"

Malashock Dance & Company will present a free concert in Balboa Park on Friday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Casa del Prado. The concert represents the culmination of a three week summer intensive workshop in modern dance. The "Summer in San Diego" Workshop has brought together students from all ove the United States to train with John Malashock and guest artists, Lynn Wimmer and Austin Hartel. Ms Wimmer is a member of the University of South Florida dance faculty and is an international choreographer.

Malashock Dance & Company is celebrating its 10th Anniversary year as one of California's premiere modern dance companies. Over the past decade, the company has become an integral part of San Diego's Art Community - providing performances, educational programs, outreach projects and classes throughout the year. Rogers & Hammersteins "South Pacific" at the Moonlight Amphitheatre

The award winning musical dramatization of wartime romances, "South Pacific," will be presented at the Moonlight Amphitheatre on August 19th through the 30th. Set in the Pacific Islands during World War II, the show intertwines two romantic themes. The first involves the love affair of Ensign Nellie Forbush, a Navy nuse from Arkansas, and Emile de Becque, a wealthy French planter in the islands. They meet an fall in love despite the disparity of their ages an the tension of wartim. The other romance belongs to Marine Lieutenant Cable and a Tonkinese girl, Liat. Cable becomes enchanted with Liat on the mysterious island of Bali Ha'i.

Performances of "South Pacific" are Wednesdays through Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheatre located at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive in Brengle Terrace Park. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. for those that would like to picnic before the event. Ticket prices range from $12 to $26 and are available in advance at the VisTix Office (651 East Vista Way) at (760)724-2110.

 

Lamb's Players Theatre Presents "The Sneeze"

Lamb's Players Theatre presents "The Sneeze," from August 21 - September 27, 1998 on the resident stage at 1142 Orange Ave. in Coronado. "The Sneeze," is Michael Frayn's brilliant adaptation of Chekhov's often overlooked short stories and one act plays. These delightfully funny and insightful pieces are woven into an uproarious whole by memvbers of the Lamb's Players Repertory Company.

Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.Tickets range from $16 to $30 and are available by calling the Lamb's Players Theatre Box office at ( 619) 437-0600. Discounts are available for youth, seniors, active military duty and groups of 15 or more.

 

17th Annual Quilt Show at the San Diego Convention Center

The San Diego Quilt Show Inc., a non-profit corporation announces our 17th annual quilt show to be held August 21,22 and 23, 1998. There will be hundreds of quilts and over 40 vendors at this show. There will be an ongoing quilters charity auction of donated items by the members of the San Diego Quilt Show, Rosies' Calico Cupboard, and several well known quilting teachers.

There will be a special attraction featuring "Fairfields Diamond Celebrity Fashion Show August 21, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this event will be $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Admission for the daily show: $7.00 Hours are: Friday 10 a.m. to 6p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information please call (619) 443-2706 for a recorded message.

 

A Taste of National City

In one location and in one evening experience a culinary delight at the Taste of National City. There will be a variety of food all in one location and at a great price. The Seventh Annual Taste of National City will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, in National City's historic "Heritage Square," located in the 900 block of "A" Avenue.

Vote for the "Peoples Choice" and "Best Dessert" awards. Live music will be performed by the Brick Row Band and there will be many door prizes and raffle prizes. Restaurants providing sampl-es of food include: The Barbecue Pit, Continental Catering, Domino's Pizza, Mary J's Fine Food, South Bay Café/Holiday Inn and more. Tickets are $12 general and $8.50 for seniors. The event is sponsored by the National City Chamber of Commerce.
