Congressman Bob Filner has named Donna Estrada of San Diego as his Citizen of the Month for August. Estrada is an active community volunteer with a long history of involvement in both neighborhood activities and with San Diego's parents and children.
"Donna Estrada has dedicated her adult life to improving the way in which we teach our children," Filner said. "Donna has taken a personal interest in the well-being of her community in a way that makes us all proud. She sets a selfless example for all citizens who are searching for a way to give back to their community."
Donna works for the Homeys Youth Foundation (HYF) and Home Instruction for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY). She serves as the liaison between families and community services, as well as managing the daily duties of the HYF/HIPPY office.
Donna's activities with children and families extend well beyond the office with her volunteer services including the Parent Child Center/Neighborhood House; the Parent Involvement Task Force, San Diego City School District; Literacy Network Committee with San Diego Council on Literacy; Stand for Children; and the School Site Council (SSC) Emerson/Bandini Elementary School.
Donna describes her life's work as a mission to "use my experience and knowledge in the area of Parent Involvement/Family Support, Community Mobilization, Child/Family Advocacy that will enhance and contribute to the overall goals of the Organization and Community."
Each month, Filner honors a different resident of his district who has made significant contributions in the areas of community involvement, volunteerism, and public service. Filner launched the "Citizen of the Month" program in October 1996.
"Our communities rely on people who are willing to give their time and effort to help others, without care for recognition or personal gain," Filner said. "Donna Estrada is another one of our community heroes who are working for a brighter future for all of us."
