Housing Commission Applauded for 20 Years of Service

In commemoration of the San Diego Housing Commis-sion's 20th anniversary San Diego City Council issued an official Resolution citing the agency's "outstanding leadership and invaluable contributions to our community" -- and declared the agency's anniversary day to the "San Diego Housing Commission Day."

Housing Commission programs and achievements heralded in the City Resolution included:

• The fact that the agency has received numerous, national awards over its two decades of service to the community;

• Invested billions of dollars in the San Diego economy, including over $600 million provided to rental property owners for rental assistance on behalf of impoverished San Diego families, elderly and disabled persons;

• Issued $515 million in bonds for the development of 10,000 apartment units (including over 3,000 affordable rent units);



Among the highlights of the Resolution was the Housing Commission's First-time Homebuyer Program.

• Developed and managed 1,860 public housing units has earned critical acclaim and national awards in recognition of the agency's scattered housing site philosophy and dedication to excellence in the design and maintenance of its properties;

• Rehabilitated more than 8,000 homes, helping revitalize older neighborhoods;

• Helped more than 3,100 families purchase their first homes;

• Created a Resident Services department that has national standards in helping residents achieve self-sufficiency; and

• Effectively collaborated with thousands of public and private sector partners to provide quality, affordable housing opportunities for approximately 500,000 low-income residents.

Established in 1979 by San Diego City Council, the San Diego Housing Commission helps more than 40,000 individuals with affordable housing each year through award-winning programs that benefit the city's economy and help revitalize neighborhoods.
