"Homeward Bound"
Community Actors Theatre will again, present the morality play with music, "Homeward Bound." This hilariously funny play, with a very serious message, presents a must see story of the Devil and St. Peter, fussing over who is getting who. This production will run April 29th thru May 23rd., Thursday thru Sunday. Tickets are $8 for seniors and students, $10 general admission. Downtown Arts Center's Open House
Young, old, artists, audience; everyone is invited to participate in an Open House of the Downtown Arts Center. The Celebration on Saturday, May 1st, will inaugurate the future home of Onstage Playhouse, the Gallery of Chula Vista Art Guild and the offices of Friends of the Arts. Music, dancing and poetry will be presented. An Ice Cream Social for families will be held from 2 to 4. The Happy Hour from 4 to 7 will include the ribbon cutting and celebratory champagne. "The Witless Lady"
This Golden Age comedy of errors concerns a woman who transforms herself from dunce to learned scholar through the power of love. Lope de Vega takes aim at the heart of comedy and stirs love in the hearts of two warring sisters. One of his most delicious comedies. "The Witless Lady" plays April 21 through June 6 at the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, located at 421 North Avenue 19, in Los Angeles. Performances alternate weekly in Spanish and English. "Free For All First Sundays"
The focus of May's Free-For-All First Sunday the beauty of dance and community art. Participants can enjoy a performance by Christina Jones-Stewart, the internationally renowned choreographer, dancer and teacher whose background includes eight years as founding company member of New York's Urban Bush Women.
On view will be artwork created in community centers as part of Voices 92113, collaboration between MCA, the artist collectives Art Now! and Heads on Fireworks. Both performances and exhibitions are free to the public, as is admission to the La Jolla location where visitors can view Sacred Mirrors. MCA La Jolla is located at 700 Prospect Street and is open on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Our Town
Our Town reaches into the past of America and movingly evokes a way of life which is lost in our present turmoil. It is the life of any town, of any human, from the cradle to the grave... Simple, straightforward, yet full of depth and compassion. Presented by North Coast Repertory Theatre, Our Town has two performances on May 2, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Our town will be performed at the California Center for the Arts, Small Theatre located at 340 N. A Midsummer Night's Dream
Director Peter Larlham brings Shakespeare's classic tale of love, humanity, and the supernatural into a surreal exploration of the nature of dreams and the realm of the subconscious mind. In addition to our regular performances, Don Powell Theater, SDSU is proud to announce "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will also be showing in four special matinees for San Diego area schools. Life and Laughter Literary Faire
Life and Laughter: A Literary Faire comes to United States International University on Sunday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The faire will feature presentations by authors, book signings, book sales, entertainment and a lunch. Speakers will be political cartoonist and comedian Steve Kelley; author, humorist and radio host Richard Lederer; author-educators Harold and Shirley Haizlip; Jeff Drayer, M.D.; and author Sara Lewis. MiraCosta Spring Dance Concert
Faculty and student-choreographed works, with styles including tap, swing, country-western, hip-hop, and jazz, will be featured in MiraCosta College's Annual Spring Dance Concert, slated for April 30 at 7:30 p.m., May 1 at 7:30 p.m., and May 2 at 2 p.m. in the MiraCosta College Theatre, One Barnard Drive, Oceanside. The dance concert will also include a guest performance by "Ade-lante," a ballet folklorico company from Vista. Admission to the event is set at $7; students and seniors $5. "Fashion Is"
The second major component of the Design Worlds/Diseño Mundos exhibition will open to visitors at Children's Museum/Museo de los Niños on May 4. The "Fashion Is" installation will let children and their families explore this creative and diverse aspect of design, ranging from everyday wear to the glamorous world of high fashion. There will be fashion-related workshops that will include hat making, fashion animation, found fashion, fiber arts, life-size paper dolls, accessory design, textile design, spatter painted clothing, and t-shirt design. Adams Avenue Roots Festival
San Diego's normally sedate Normal Heights neighborhood will provide fertile territory for the Adams Avenue Business Association's 26th annual Roots (folk music) Festival on Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., and Sunday, May 2 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. This year's FREE festival takes place on Adams Avenue between 34th and 35th Streets and is five blocks long with six stages featuring many artists such as Peggy Seeger, Santiago Jimenez and blues singer & guitarist John Jackson to name a few. 52nd Annual Maytime Band Review
The Bonita Vista High School marching band has a tough act to follow in this year's Maytime Band Review parade itself. The Barons Brigade will try to make it three championships in a row May 1 when the 52nd Annual Maytime Band Review steps off along Highland Avenue in National City at 10:30 a.m. Bleacher seating is available for $2 on a reserved basis by calling the National City Chamber of Commerce at 477-9339. Benicia High School won the 1998 Harlan Skinner Musical Performance Trophy for small schools. Montgomery High School will defend its 1998 Tom Leonard Marching Excellence Trophy for large schools.
Buds `n Blooms!
The month of May will definitely be the time to visit Balboa Park as it puts on its brightest, showiest face for the second annual Buds `n Blooms! A Floral Fiesta in Balboa Park. Over 50,000 blossoms will abound in the Park. Baskets of cascading blooms will hang on lampposts, and fresh-cut flowers will be sold from carts on the Prado. More than 85 Park organizations participate in this celebration, presenting floral-themed exhibits, demonstrations, performances, puppet shows, tours, hands-on craft activities, lectures and concerts. A Gala Benefit for the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts!
"OLE `99," a celebration of the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, is the 19th annual "El Angel" Awards Gala Dinner being presented Thursday, May 20, at the Regal Biltmore Hotel, 506 South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. A reception at 6:00 p.m. will be followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. Attendees can participate in the highly anticipated Silent Auction from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
The "El Angel" Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement will be presented to the renowned composer/guitarist Lalo Guerrero. The Artist Award has been justifiably earned by the brilliant mezzo-soprano of the Los Angeles Opera, Susanna Guzman. The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts will give its corporate awards to The Boeing Company and Edison International. The "El Angel" Awards are the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts' recognition of outstanding contributions to Hispanic Arts in America.
Each year, the artistic and corporate communities of Los Angeles join with the Hispanic community to support the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts which is now celebrating 26 years of presenting award-winning theatre. BFA was founded in 1973 by actress Carmen Zapata, director Margarita Galban and playwright/set designer Estela Scarlata. Olé is a vital source of funding for the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, recognized leader in Hispanic American theatre. Proceeds are used to support the many important programs of this non-profit organization.
