New School Site Selection is Topic of May 1 Meeting for Downtown, Golden Hill, South San Diego Residents

Downtown, Golden Hill and South San Diego residents are invited to a community meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, May 1 at Kimbrough Elementary School, 321 Hoitt St., to discuss the selection process for new elementary schools in their areas.

The San Diego City Schools district needs community input to begin the site selection process for three new elementary schools funded by Proposition MM. The new schools will serve the areas currently covered by Brooklyn, Kimbrough, King, Logan, Perkins and Sherman elementary schools.

In addition to community residents, the district encourages teachers, school staff, and representatives of local organizations to attend the meeting. For more information, call the San Diego City Schools Facilities Planning Department at 293-8066.

 

MiraCosta College to Host `Sneak Preview Night' for Prospective Students, Parents, Community Members

Students about to graduate from high school, their parents and other community members thinking about attending MiraCosta College are invited to attend Sneak Preview Night, to be held May 3, 6-8 p.m. in the Student Center cafeteria at the Oceanside campus at One Barnard Drive; and May 6, 6-8 p.m., in Room 204 at the San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave., Cardiff.

Those who drop in during one or both evenings will get a "sneak preview" of college life at MiraCosta and beyond. MiraCosta counselors and instructors will be on hand to discuss educational plans and programs, and campus tours will be given by MiraCosta's student ambassadors. Prospective students who plan to transfer from MiraCosta to a four-year university can learn about MiraCosta's transfer-guarantee program and talk to representatives from UCSD, CSU San Marcos, SDSU and UC Riverside. Presentations will include a session on MiraCosta's transfer program as well as the study-abroad program. Attendees can take the opportunity to pick up summer and fall schedules, which obtain applications for enrollment. Refreshments will be served.

Parking permits will not be required either night.

 

San Diego Natural History Museum Hosts Forum Featuring the Power of the Media in Environmental Awareness

The San Diego Natural History Museum will host "Review of Public Opinion Surveys and Media Connections" at a public forum on Thursday, May 6, 1999, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the City of San Diego Environmental Services auditorium, 9601 Ridgehaven Court.

The three-part forum includes public opinion surveys regarding what people care about in the quality of life of their communities. A media panel will address the power of the media in influencing public awareness of important issues affecting San Diego County.

Audience participation is critical to the success of the forum, and the public is encouraged to attend. The forum is FREE to attendees.

Border activists plan May vigils

Immigration activists have scheduled weekly vigils on Saturday during May at the border to draw attention to human rights and the plight of immigrants and refugees.

The series of five vigils will begin at noon Saturday, May 1 on a hill just south of the intersection of Rail Court and the southern terminus of San Ysidro Boulevard in San Ysidro. Each vigil will feature a different theme, explained vigil coordinator Noreen Sullivan. The hour-long vigils will include singing, prayer, and reflection on workers (May 1), mothers and children (May 8), refugees (May 15), prisoners (May 22), and `one world, one family' (May 29).

The American Friends Service Committee Border Witness and the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights are co-sponsoring the vigils. For more information, phone (619) 233-4114.

 

Entire Southern California Holds Filipino Blood Drives

On Saturday, May 1, 1999, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, American Red Cross and Iglesia Ni Cristo Churches will hold a special blood drive at 2201 E. 8th Street in the Function Hall (corner of 8th and V), National City, 91950. This drive is one of several drives being held at Iglesia Ni Cristo churches throughout southern California this month.

"This is primarily a Filipino group, and we will celebrate with great food, a live band and fellowship," says Pedro Maninang, from the National City Iglesia Ni Cristo, "We already have over 130 people signed up to donate, so we are demonstrating how the Filipino community enjoys giving back to our community."
