County Bar Names La Raza Member as Public Lawyer of the Year

La Raza Lawyers Association member, Ana Espana, has been named Public Lawyer of the Year by the San Diego County Bar Association. SDCBA President, Todd Stevens, will present the award to Ms. Espana at the Bar's law week dinner on Saturday, May 1, 1999 at the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel in San Diego.

Ms. Espana is being honored for her tireless efforts on behalf of indigent children as the supervising attorney for the county's child dependency unit. She is a frequent lecturer and media commentator in the area of juvenile advocacy and dependency law. Ms. Espana's solid reputation lead to her appointment several years ago to the judicial evaluations committee which screens applicants for vacancies on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

In 1996 Juvenile presiding Judge James R. Milliken presented Ms. Espana with two awards for outstanding service to the children of San Diego County: the American Bar Association Child Advocacy Award and a Certificate of Appreciation from County Supervisor Greg Cox. In 1998 she was again honored for her work as a child advocate and received a "Phenomenal Woman" award in a joint ceremony sponsored by the minority bar associations.

Ms. Espana earned her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of San Diego and has practiced juvenile law for fifteen years. Before coming to work for the county, she had a private juvenile law practice in San Diego.
