"Raza Spoken Here:" Poesía Chicana, is a collection of Chicano spoken word on CD to be released by Calaca Press in the month of May.
"Raza Spoken Here" features an eclectic lineup of Chicano poets from San Diego, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.
The CD includes poetry from: The Taco Shop Poets, Olga Angelina, García Echeverria, Manuel J. Vélez, The Rasquachi Performers, Elba Rosario Sánchez, Daniel Sánchez-Glazer, Sandra C. Muñoz, Christian Ramírez, Chuy Quintero, and Trago Amargo
The Taco Shop Poets are a community based poetry and music collective. Founded in 1994, they have performed their brand of chorizo tonguefire at countless taco shops on both sides of the linea. The Taco Shop Poets current musical lineup includes Michael "Ming" Figgins on upright bass and Kevin P. Green on drums.
Olga Angelina García Echeverría is a Chicana writ-er and poet from East L.A. She is a graduate of the MFA program at the University of Texas El Paso and she is currently working as an English professor at various L.A. area community college's.
Manuel J. Vélez is a writer and educator who was born in Salinas, Ca., grew up in El Paso, Tx., and currently resides in San Diego, Califas. Manuel was the winner of the 1996 Pellicer-Frost Binational Poetry Contest. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Many Mountains Moving, Puerto del Sol, Entre Lineas and others.
The Rasquachi Performers are Juan Carrillo, José Centeno, Karla Díaz, Olga Angelina García Echeverría, and Ana Rosa Ramos. Elba Rosario Sánchez is a writer, teacher and cultural activist who lives and works in Oakland, California. Her book, chapbooks, and other publications, have been collections of bilingual poetry and she is now venturing into her bag of pocha stories.
Daniel Sánchez-Glazer is a student, artist, beat maker, and poet who resides in the San Francisco Bay area.
Sandra C. Muñoz is an East L.A. poet, playwright and civil rights lawyer. In addition to representing those who have suffered legal injustices, Sandra is currently working on a play for the Mark Taper Forum with Marisela Norte, Alma Cervantes and Luis Alfaro. The play was featured in the New Visions/New Voices '98 program at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the New Works Festival '98 in Los Angeles. In 1996, Sandra performed at the Mark Taper Forum in DIVA L.A. which was directed by Luis Alfaro and Diane Rodríguez of the Mark Taper's Latino Theater Initiative.
Christian Ramírez is a Chicano activist, student, and poet who lives in the border community of San Ysidro, Califas. He currently holds a leadership position within the Chicano organization Unión del Barrio.
Chuy Quintero is an artist and poet from Sacramento, Califas who currently lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
Trago Amargo is an activist and poet who resides in San Diego, Califas. He actively works with organizations promoting the struggle of the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional.
