Radio Days

During the 1940's, radio evoked visions of exciting events, touching melodramas, and elegant ballrooms for thousands of people from Hollywood to Chicago to New York City. The East County Performing Arts Center will help a new audience to experience those golden days when it hosts a performance of the musical variety show Radio Days on Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Featuring the vocal artistry of Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Barbara Bishop, Kurt Niska, Michael Swedberg, and Terrence Niska, Radio Days interweaves the music of Tommy Dorsey's Pied Pipers and Glenn Miller's Modernaires with segments from vintage serials, quiz shows, commercials and comedies, along with "cameos" from Carmen Miranda, Kay Kyser, and Betty Grable. Peabody Trio

The Peabody Trio, considered one of the leading piano trios in the world, will perform at 8 p.m. April 17 in the Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego. Performing with the Peabody as special guest musician will be Charles Neidich, a clarinetist who maintains a solo career and is praised the world over for his performances which "surpass the limitations of the instrument." La Jolla Playhouse's 1999 Season

On Sunday, April 18 at 12 noon, single tickets go on sale to the general public for all six productions of La Jolla Playhouse's 1999 season. The 1999 season kicks off on May 18 with the West Coast premiere of Regina Taylor's new play with music set in the jazz swing era, "OO-BLA-DEE" (May 18-June 20); Joe Orton's wicked comedy, "LOOT" (June 8-July 11); a new musical "JANE EYRE" (July 13-August 29); Pretty Fire (July 23-August 29); Wonderland (Sept. 14-October 17); Sweet Bird of Youth (October 12-November 14). Make a Difference

The volunteers of San Diego EarthWorks proudly invite you to support the 10th annual EarthFair in Balboa Park on April 18, 10 am to 5 pm. EarthFair `99 showcases more than 200 exhibitors providing opportunities to get informed, make the connections and take action. EarthFair `99 will connect you to the latest renewable energy choices, conservation projects, recycling/reusing/reducing waste programs, earth-friendly food, electric and alternative fuel vehicles, and an Advanced Technologies Pavilion sponsored by Green Mountain Energy. There will a Children's Earth Parade. There will also be six stages of entertainment for all cultures and all ages: folk, jazz, country, world beat, and rock and roll. The Bridges that Unite Us/Los Puentes que Nos Unen

The San Diego Public Library's discussion series. The Bridges that Unite Us/Los Puentes que Nos Unen, will continue on Monday, April 19. It will cover Heart of Aztlan, a novel portraying the plight of workers in an Albuquerque barrio. All discussions will be led by Dr. Beatrice Pita of UCSD on Monday evenings at 6:30 in the Wangenheim Room of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street, in downtown San Diego. Twelve Angry Jurors

Coronado Playhouse proudly presents Reginald Rose's Twelve Angry Jurors adapted to stage by Sherman L. Sergel. This dramatic tale of the deliberation of a young man's murder trial and its affect on 12 people from various walks of life. Audiences will be taken on an incredible intellectual and emotional tour as twelve of San Diego's finest actors portray the multi-faceted characters brought to life more than four decades ago. Twelve Angry Jurors opens Friday, April 16 and runs through May 23rd. Ticket prices range from $12-$15. and may be purchased by calling 435-4856.

 

Southwest Indian Arts

Commemorating the tenth anniversary of its annual Southwest Indian Arts Colloquium, the San Diego Museum of Man will feature "Conversations in Culture: A Tenth Anniversary Retrospective," an exhibit featuring a diverse collection of carvings, figurines, jewelry, blown glass and pottery by Native American artisans. The exhibit opens Saturday, April 17, 1999. The exhibit will spotlight the multi-faceted work of these talented artisans, and is scheduled to run through April 30, 2000. Alex Maldonado, a Pasqua Yaqui flutemaker from Arizona, demonstrates a flute with carved images of the Yaqui Deer Dance. This flute is featured in the current retrospective exhibition.

 

Something Different

Josefina Lopez, poet and playwright ("Real Women have Curves"), will perform as "Super Chingona," on Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m., in USD's Shiley Theatre. In addition, the world premier of "P.M.S." (Pinche Mentirosa Sisters) will be presented. The events are free and open to the public. Presented by the Association of Chicana Activists (AChA). Day of the Young Child

The Southwestern College Child Development Club is hosting its 13th annual Day of the Young Child April 22 with fun-filled activities that include face-painting, storytelling, bean sprout greenhouse growing and marble painting. The Day of the Young Child emphasizes the success of youth centers and promotes student preparation for a career in child development,. Students will organize a schedule of events as part of their advocacy training to develop activity skills child centers apply in everyday situations to promote socialization, self concept, artistic creativity and language development. Music from Colonial Mexico

Camerata Nueva España was established in 1998 by director Ruben Valenzuela to perform the music of Colonial Mexico's great cathedrals, convents and monasteries. Camerata Nueva España is comprised of a chamber choir and chamber orchestra. The program will feature a cappella Renaissance works by composers Hernando Franco, Francisco Lopez-Capillas and Juan de Lienas in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The concert is open to the public. Who Can I Run To?

Come visit, Who Can I Run To? a multimedia art exhibit designed and created by teens. It addresses relationship violence and gives young people the opportunity to add their thoughts and comments to the exhibit. This unique exhibit is coming to Oceanside for the first time and will be on display in the Civic Center Community Rooms, 330 North Coast Highway, on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20 and 21 from 10 am to 7:30 pm. There will be special live performances created and performed by teens. Topics include excuses people use to justify abuse, non-violent conflict resolution, and how substance abuse relates to abusive relationships. Admission is free. Think about it! It's not cool to be cruel!

 

Magnolia Festival of the Arts

The fifth annual Magnolia Festival of the Arts will be held on Main Street in El Cajon on Saturday, April 24 & Sunday, April 25 from 10 am to 5 pm. Beautiful art, delicious food and fun will be featured from Magnolia to Claydelle with great music on the Main Street Promenade. The art show presents over 50 of the Southwest's finest artists, artisans and crafters including internationally known Amado Peña, Colorado potter Marvin Blackmore, local artists Sandra Jordan, Gene Locklear, Mark Rimland, Kristina Woodruff and many more. Culture & Politics in the New South Africa

The Malcolm X Branch Library of the San Diego Public Library continues its inaugural "Book Review & Lecture Forum 1999" on books, current events and topical issues with a National Poetry Month talk on Art, Culture & Politics in the New South Africa featuring celebrated South African Poet, Essayist and Political Activist, Keora-petse "Willie" Kgositsile, on Sunday, April 25 at 2pm - 4pm.

He has published several books of verse including Spirits Unchained (1969), For Melba (1970), My Name is Africa (1971), The Present is a Dangerous Place to Live (1975), Places and Bloodstains (1976), and When the Clouds Clear (1990). He currently teaches in the Afro-American Studies Department at UCLA. He is the recipient of several awards including the Conrad Kent Rivers Memorial Poetry Award and the Harlem Cultural Council Poetry Award. Professor Kgositsile will also read his poetry at the event which is free and open to the public.
