Senator Barbara Boxer announced today that young people who are interested in applying for nomination to U.S. Service Academies for the class beginning in Summer 2000 should write to her San Francisco office to request an application. Applications must be completed and returned to Senator Boxer's office by the end of October 1999.
Candidates for the service academies must be between 17 and 22 years old and a U.S. citizen by July 1, 2000, a California resident, unmarried, not pregnant, and without child support obligation.
Each member of Congress, whether in the House of Representative or the Senate, can have only five appointees in each academy. California, with fifty-two members of the House and just two Senators, is the most competitive in seeking a Senatorial nomination to an academy. Senator Boxer urged interested persons to also request an application from his or her local Congressperson.
Applications must also apply directly to the academies of their choice.
