USS Benfold Open to Public -Support Job Fair

The guided-missile destroyer USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) will be moored at Broadway Pier and open for public tours Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The BENFOLD is also open for participants in the Spring `99 San Diego Job Fair to be held on "B" Street Pier, downtown San Diego April 10. Tours for Job Fair guests will include high-tech weapons systems, propulsions spaces and a chance to talk to the men and women of the crew.

The BENFOLD is a three year old ARLEIGH BURKE class guided missile destroyer with a crew of 310. The ship is capable of performing a variety of missions: Tomahawk-strike, anti-air, surface and undersea warfare. The 505 feet, 8,300 ton ship is equipped with the Aegis combat System, which includes the AN/SPY-1D phased array radar that scans in all directions simultaneously to detect, track and engage hundreds of aircraft and missiles.

 

Cuomo Announces $2.4 Billion in Grants to Fund HUD Housing and Community Development Programs

Washington — Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo announced the availability of $2.4 billion in grants to fund HUD programs in communities across the nation this year.

A Super Notice of Funds Availability (SuperNOFA) issued today by HUD notifies communities and groups around the nation of grants that are available for a broad range of programs to help build affordable housing, boost employment, revitalize distressed public housing, fund fair housing enforcement and provide assistance to homeless people.

"We are making the process of getting HUD grants easier, faster and cheaper," Cuomo said. "State and local officials, business people, and non-profit groups will spend less time and money filling out forms and more time and money creating jobs, building housing and strengthening communities."

Karen Vargas Promoted to Senior VP & Manager at McMillin Realty

Karen Vargas, with more than 15 years of real estate experience, has been named senior vice president and sales manager of McMillin Realty, San Diego County's largest independently owned and operated real estate brokerage. The announcement was made by Pat Poole, McMillin Realty's executive vice president.

Vargas has served as branch manager of the firm's Terra Nova office in Chula Vista for nearly three years, and was the assistant manager of the branch four years prior.

As sales manager of McMillin Realty's six offices and nearly 200 agents, she will be overseeing operations throughout the county.

A native of Mexico City, and 20-year resident of San Diego's South County, Vargas is bilingual and bicultural and has played an important role in the development of the firm's comprehensive Hispanic services.

 

Councilmember Kehoe Hosts Citywide Y2K Community Information Fair April 17

In an effort to provide information to city residents about Y2K preparedness in the public and private sector, City Councilmember Christine Kehoe is hosting a citywide Y2K Community Information Fair on Saturday, April 17, from 9 am to noon in the Santa Fe Room of the Balboa Park Club in Balboa Park. Admission is free and it is open to the public.

"Everyone is talking about the Y2K computer bug and how it may affect their day-to-day lives," said Councilmember Kehoe. "I'd like to offer a forum where residents can get answers to their concerns. We'll have city staff from water, sewer, and traffic departments, as well as fire fighters and police officers. We've also include utility cable and phone companies, health-care providers, financial institutions, local air-travel experts, Hi-Tech and computer firms to bring information and answer questions about what's being done to minimize problems with the regular services that most of us count on every day."

Casa Dobson to Open in Tijuana

Dobson's Bar & Restaurant, a fine dining institution in downtown San Diego since 1984, will open a sister restaurant, Casa Dobson, in Tijuana on Wednesday, April 14, following a private opening for invited guests on Tuesday, April 13.

Located across from Caliente Racetrack and adjacent to County Club Hotel, Casa Dobson will feature many menu favorites from the San Diego restaurant, including Dobson's Famous Mussel Bisque.

"It has been my dream for many years to actually be a part of Mexico. Casa Dobson is the realization of that dream," said restaurateur and namesake Paul Dobson, who in addition to his twenty-five years in the restaurant business is one of America's few professional bullfighters, and for many years a popular figure in Tijuana's bullrings.

"Casa Dobson will feature Dobson's style of cooking, using ingredients indigenous to Mexico. When there is something exciting in the San Diego region, we like to feature it here. In the same way, we have sought out what's excellent in Mexico and will feature that in a regional menu with a Dobson's flair, with favorites from around the world," said Max Elfman, Dobson's executive chef since 1992 who will supervise the Casa Dobson kitchen with the support of Dobson's sous chef Jeff Hurlbut.
