Do Something Seeks America's Young Community Leaders to Apply for $100,000 Do Something BRICK Award

The nonprofit organization Do Something is launching a nationwide search for young community leaders to apply for the 1999 Do Something BRICK Award for Community Leadership and the opportunity to win a $100,000 grant. The annual award honors and financially supports ten of America's best young leaders under 30 who are taking action to measurably strengthen their communities.

"The BRICK Award helps young people turn their dreams for their communities into realities," said Andrew Shue, the actor who co-founded Do Something in 1993. "We believe in the power of young people to change the world."

Do Something BRICK Award winners each receive a $100,000 grant to support their community-building activities and a national grand prize winner receives $100,000 at an annual BRICK Award gala. Last year's grand prize winner was Mark Levine from New York City who established Credit Where Credit Is Due, Inc., a nonprofit agency that promotes economic empowerment for low-income families in Washington Heights. Other BRICK Award winners are tutoring at-risk students, cleaning up the environment, caring for people with AIDS and helping gang members choose peace.

Since 1996, Do Something has awarded more than $500,000 in grants to 30 young community leaders who are building better communities brick by brick. Do Something BRICK Award winners are selected based on a series of essays, interviews and a weekend of creative group activities before a panel of veteran community leaders. The judges evaluate the applicants' leadership and organization skills, long-term vision for their community and the measurable results of how their efforts have created lasting, positive change.

Young leaders can request a BRICK Award application by calling 212-523-1175 or by sending an e-mail to brick@dosomething.org. The application is also available on the Internet at www.dosomething.org. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 5, 1999.
